We would like to welcome a new team member to the Delta County Conservation District, Emily Blair. Emily joins us as the Program Support Specialist.

Emily, originally from the southern lower peninsula, moved to the UP in 2017 to attend Lake Superior State University. After receiving a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management she moved to Appleton, Wisconsin where she spent three years working in natural resources.

In 2024 she made her way back to the Upper Peninsula with her husband and three dogs. Emily enjoys spending time outside with her family, birding, and reading. She is excited to bring her passion for preserving our natural resources to Delta County.

October is Firewood Month!
Moving firewood long distances can spread invasive forest pests hidden in or on the wood. Your firewood choices matter, and you can help slow the spread of these tree-killing pests. This October, we’ll be celebrating Firewood Month with our friends at Hungry Pests to help spread the word on this important topic!

Don’t move firewood – instead, make one of these better choices:

Buy firewood where you’ll burn it.
Buy certified heat treated firewood.
Gather firewood on site when permitted.

Your local Conservation Technician here! Our partners at MSU Extension Upper Peninsula are putting on a Pasture Walk focusing on building soil health October 6th.

The pasture walk will focus on management strategies to improve soil health. During drought, healthy soils allow for more rapid water infiltration and possess greater water holding capacity.

Frank Wardynski and Kable Thurlow, Michigan State University Extension educators, we'll be discussing a project they will be working on for the next two years. The project involves working with cooperative farmers to demonstrate management practices that will improve soil health and improve resiliency to drought.

In addition to discussing the project they will also be demonstrating the message of determining healthy soils with water filtration and holding capacity, compaction, and the shovel test looking for soil aggregation.
