Cancer is the most dangerous threat to firefighter health and safety today.

Carolyn Phipps knows this all too well after losing her husband, Hanover County Battalion Chief Jeff Phipps, to cancer. At age 50, he went in for a routine colonoscopy and was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

Now, she's encouraging localities to apply for the Firefighter Cancer Screening Grant which provides funds for Virginia localities to screen career firefighters for cancer.

Grants are awarded by the Virginia Fire Services Board based on evaluations and recommendations from .

Help save the lives of those who save lives every day. The first deadline to apply is December 31st.

VFMA/VDFP Use of Force Cadre presented Use of Force training at the Public Safety Training Center (PSTC) in Hanover this month.

The course included an instructor in-service training day and a refresher training for fire marshals. Training consisted of single officer tactics and multi-officer scenarios. The Virginia Department of Fire Programs welcomes newly appointed Executive Director, Thomas Breyer.

Breyer joins VDFP as a 27-year student of the fire service. He spent more than a decade as a firefighter, paramedic, instructor, and company officer before moving into national fire and emergency medical services leadership roles with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), and then into fire and public safety consulting.

“I would like to thank Chief Deputy Director Jamey Brads for his leadership with the VDFP, especially over these last several months while serving as both the Chief Deputy and Acting Executive Director,” Breyer said. “I was drawn to the VDFP because your work reflects what matters most to me, service, safety, and reducing risk to firefighters and our communities.”

Breyer will begin his new role on November 10.

Welcome, Thomas Breyer!
