Starfish Infant Aquatics We teach self-rescue swimming lessons for children ages 6 mos-6 yrs old, emphasizing safety & fun!

In just 6 weeks, your child could learn in weeks what it takes some kids months or years to learn! Starfish Infant Aquatics is a unique swimming lesson program for children. Our intensive, one-on-one lessons take kids from hesitant and unsafe around the water to being confident swimmers within a matter of weeks. While the focus at Starfish Infant Aquatics is on survival and water safety, children ages 6 months-6 years old learn solid swimming skills that give them a strong foundation for a lifelong love of the water. Teaching competence before confidence, kids learn that aquatic environments are to be respected but also offer ample opportunities for fun! Lessons are individualized to each child’s physical and emotional development, meeting them where they are each day. Depending on the child, a lesson could involve working strictly on survival skills like learning to rollover and float or swimming to the wall, or progressing to more advanced skills like diving sticks or learning to jump in safely (with an adult right there, of course!). Given the unforgiving nature of water and the natural curiosity of children, safety around the water cannot be emphasized enough. No one is “drown proof,” but children as young as one year old are developmentally ready to learn aquatic skills that can give them a shot at survival, if heaven forbid they ever need to use them. There is no substitute for constant, eyes-on supervision and having physical barriers to the water. But if an accident happens, the best person to in charge of safely handling the situation is the child who can calmly and confidently handle himself in the water. Plus, how awesome is it when you take your family to the neighborhood pool, and your little starfish gets to show off his amazing swimming skills? Main lessons are held in Glen Allen, VA, convenient to Richmond, Midlothian and Mechanicsville, and also at the Weinstein JCC. Please contact me if you have a group of 6 or more and would like lessons closer to you.

If you've ever watched one of our lessons and wondered what we're actually paying attention to, the answer is... a lot. 🤪

Sometimes even the smallest adjustment makes a huge difference!

That's one of the things we love about our one-on-one lessons. We can focus on the swimmer right in front of us and adjust our teaching to meet their needs.

With Infant Aquatics®, completion-based isn't open-ended. It means our swim families know exactly what skills their kids are working toward, and completing the program is based on what their swimmers can actually DO in the water.

In so many traditional group programs, completion-based instruction can mean a child stays in the same level for months until they're ready to move up. And because those lessons often focus on play, comfort, and guided exploration, progress can feel pretty open-ended.

With Infant Aquatics®, our curriculum, specialized teaching techniques, and highly trained instructors are specifically focused on helping infants and young children develop real skills in a matter of weeks.

Through short, consistent, one-on-one lessons, swimmers work through a clear progression of skills, building on what they've learned until they can demonstrate those skills independently.

It's one thing to learn how to float. It's another to learn how to get yourself into that float, find air, and maintain it independently if you've fallen in the water.

We teach those skills progressively, helping children learn how to respond to what's happening in the water rather than relying on someone else to position them.

Of course, supervision, barriers, and other layers of water safety are still incredibly important, but if a child ever finds themselves in the water unexpectedly, we want them to have practiced skills they can use to help themselves.

That's exactly why we teach the way we do. 🩵

Maybe you've been teaching swim lessons for years, or you've watched your kids in traditional lessons thinking, "There's gotta be more than this."

There is — and you can be the one to bring it to your community!

Infant Aquatics® instructors complete 100+ hours of hands-on training, along with academic coursework, learning how to teach everything from breath control and independent floating to swim-float-swim.

And just like the kids they're learning to teach, instructors build their skills through hands-on practice and progression.

It's specialized training for a potentially life-saving skill set.

If you've ever wanted to take your passion for water safety a step further, this might be something worth exploring. 🩵

One of the biggest misconceptions about infant swim lessons is that babies are just relying on natural reflexes. But that's not what we're teaching!

Our Infant Aquatics® curriculum is designed specifically around how infants and young children learn, using short, consistent, one-on-one lessons to introduce skills in a progression.

These babies aren't just reacting instinctively. They're actually learning and practicing new skills! 🩵

We love seeing kids who are excited to get in the pool!

But we never forget that being comfortable in the water doesn't necessarily mean a child knows how to respond when they need air.

That's why we teach breath control, how to independently roll back and float, and how to transition between swimming and floating right alongside building confidence!

Skills like this come from learning how our bodies actually move in the water.

Without artificial flotation holding them in a certain position, kids get the chance to learn what their own bodies do—how to balance, how to move, how to find the surface, and how to get themselves to air.

That’s a really important part of learning to swim!

We don’t just want kids who feel confident because something is keeping them afloat. We want that confidence to come from knowing what THEY can do in the water!

When we talk about having a healthy respect for the water, we don’t mean teaching kids to be afraid of it. We mean helping them understand that the water is something they need skills for.

They're going to play, jump in, and have a blast in the water.

Underneath all of that, they’re also learning what to do when they go underwater, how to find air, how to move through the water, and how to respond when they need to.

We don’t really teach skills in isolation because real life doesn't work like that.

It’s not, “Okay, you know how to float now. Cool. Moving on.”

It’s more like, "Okay, now you know how to float. Let’s teach you how to get yourself into that float."

And with an older swimmer, it becomes, "Okay, you know how to float. Now let’s teach you how to transition from swimming into your float, get your air, and then transition back into swimming again."

We’re constantly taking what they know and teaching them what to do with it next. 🩵

It’s not that 10 minutes is magically better than 30. It’s that the Infant Aquatics® curriculum means these kids are doing concentrated, one-on-one work, and four short lessons a week gives them frequent opportunities to practice without burning them out.

They work hard for a few minutes, let their brains and bodies rest, then come back the next day and build on it again. 💪
