Verdugo Hills Scouting proudly presented the 2025 Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award to Dr. Greg Miller, Principal of John Muir Middle School in Burbank.
Named after Elbert K. Fretwell, a Columbia University professor of education and Scouting’s second Chief Scout Executive, the award recognized educators whose work made an outstanding impact on the lives of young people and reflected the values of Scouting America.
Dr. Miller is a lifelong educator and community leader whose work is grounded in the values of service, leadership, and integrity. He grew up in Scouting and earned the rank of Life Scout, experiences that helped shape his commitment to helping young people grow in character and confidence. He later served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for his son’s troop and proudly supported his son in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
Throughout his career, Dr. Miller taught in New Jersey, Mississippi, Russia, and South Africa, bringing a global perspective to education. He taught math in LAUSD for seven years before serving nine years as an assistant principal. Fourteen years ago, he joined Burbank Unified School District as principal of John Muir Middle School.
During his tenure at Muir, Dr. Miller led transformative initiatives including MUIR UNITED and MUIR EMPOWERED, daylong conferences focused on diversity, inclusion, mental health, and student empowerment. He established a Sister School partnership with Rebun High School in Japan and created John Muir Service Day, which brought more than 200 volunteers together each year to support the campus.
Under his leadership, John Muir Middle School also added a commemorative bust, portrait gallery, and mosaic murals, and was recognized as a National School to Watch, one of the highest honors for a middle school.
Verdugo Hills Scouting congratulates Dr. Greg Miller again on receiving the 2025 Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award and celebrates his lasting impact on students, educators, and the Burbank community.
