Good news for Gloucester County Public Schools!

First came the Standards of Learning (SOL) results, followed by the School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF), accreditation, accountability pass rates, and now U.S. News & World Report.

Each measures school performance differently, but together they tell an important story about the progress taking place in Gloucester County Public Schools.

And this just in!

On Tuesday, U.S. News & World Report released its 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings, recognizing FIVE Gloucester County Public Schools!

🏆 Best Elementary Schools

• Abingdon Elementary
• Bethel Elementary
• Botetourt Elementary
• Petsworth Elementary

🏆 Best Middle School

• Page Middle School

U.S. News evaluated approximately 70,000 elementary and middle schools nationwide. Our five schools earned recognition for ranking among the top 40% of schools in Virginia in their respective categories.

This is an increase from four recognized schools last year to five this year!

We want to congratulate our students, teachers, support staff, school leaders, and families. These accomplishments are the result of your hard work, commitment, and belief in our children.

Different measures. Different methodologies. A consistent story of academic progress.

We have much to celebrate, but our work continues. Every child deserves an excellent education, and we will continue working to make that a reality.

Congratulations, GCPS! 💚🤍

Happy Virginia School Bus Driver Recognition Day!

Today, Gloucester County Public Schools celebrates and thanks all the incredible people who help get our students to and from school safely each day!

You do so much more than get students from one place to another. You greet our children with a smile, offer encouragement, show patience, and create a sense of safety and belonging. For many students, you are the first friendly faces they see in the morning and the last ones they see at the end of the school day.

The care, kindness, and dedication you show our students make a lasting difference. The relationships you build, the reassurance you provide, and the extra effort you give often mean more than you know.

To our entire GCPS transportation team, thank you for treating our students like your own, for the heart you bring to your work, and for being such an important part of our school family. Our students are in good hands because of you, and we are grateful for all you do — today and every day! 💙🩶

🚌💛 Happy School Bus Safety Week!

For many of our students, our transportation team members are the first friendly faces they see in the morning and the last caring faces they see at the end of the school day. A smile, a kind word, a little encouragement, or simply knowing someone is looking out for them can make all the difference in a child’s day.

The care our transportation team shows goes far beyond getting students safely from one place to another. They build relationships, offer reassurance, share in special moments, and help our students start and end each day feeling cared for and supported.

At Gloucester County Public Schools, we are so grateful for the dedicated people who make up our transportation family. Their work may begin way before the school day starts and continue long after the final bell, and we know the impact they make on our students lasts far beyond the ride.

To our entire transportation team, thank you for leading with heart, putting safety first, and reminding our students every day that they matter. We appreciate you more than you know! 💛🚌

Thank you to Casper and Officer Brill for being on hand at last night’s School Board meeting. Casper turns 2 on October 31! 🐾

The meeting highlighted student achievement, community service, and updates supporting GCPS students and staff.

Dr. Stefan Mygas and Dr. Brian Fries presented the 2026 accreditation and accountability results. Six schools earned Distinguished ratings: Abingdon, Achilles, Bethel, Petsworth, Page, and Peasley. Botetourt Elementary and Gloucester High School Meet Expectations.

GCPS also ranks #1 academically in Region 3 for the second consecutive year. VDOE’s Region 3 snapshot places Abingdon, Botetourt, Petsworth, Peasley, and GHS among the top five schools at their respective levels, with GHS leading the region in science mastery.

These results reflect the work of students, teachers, staff, and families. Parents, positive experiences deserve to be shared, too. Please share your honest feedback about GCPS on Niche, not only when something goes wrong. Select “Parent,” then “Next.” Participation is voluntary.

Gloucester High School Update

Earlier today, Gloucester High School administrators and officers from the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a possible threat involving an individual. After following up on leads and speaking with students, law enforcement determined that there was no threat to Gloucester High School.

Separately, emergency medical personnel responded to an unrelated medical situation on campus, which required a temporary medical hold. That hold has been lifted, and normal school operations have resumed.

We want to reassure our families and community that Gloucester High School is safe. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We take every report seriously and work closely with law enforcement to investigate concerns thoroughly and promptly.

We appreciate the professionalism of our school staff, the partnership of the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office and emergency responders, and the patience and understanding of our families.

Thank you for your continued trust and support.

GCPS is exploring the possibility of hosting an I'm Determined Echo Event at Gloucester High School, in collaboration with Mathews and Lancaster, for high school students with disabilities and their parents/caregivers.

WHAT IS I'M DETERMINED? (https://imdetermined.org/)

I'm Determined is a Virginia Department of Education initiative that helps students with disabilities develop the skills they need to have a stronger voice in their education and future.

Through I'm Determined, students learn to better understand their strengths, needs, preferences, and interests while developing skills in self-advocacy, goal setting, decision-making, problem-solving, choice making, independence, and taking a more active role in their IEP and future planning.

An I'm Determined Echo Event brings the experience and activities of I'm Determined directly to students in their local community. Students would participate in engaging, student-focused sessions while parents and caregivers would have the opportunity to attend separate informational sessions.

We would love your feedback as we explore bringing this opportunity to Gloucester! Please complete the Google Form Survey. Thank you!

STATE ACCOUNTABILITY RATINGS ARE IN!

Six of our eight Gloucester County Public Schools earned the state’s highest rating of DISTINGUISHED in the Virginia Department of Education’s latest School Performance and Support Framework.

That is up from two Distinguished schools last year.

Abingdon, Achilles, Bethel, Petsworth, Page, and Peasley are rated Distinguished.

Botetourt Elementary and Gloucester High School earned Meets Expectations ratings.

No Gloucester school is below expectations.

Gloucester also has three of the top five elementary schools in Region 3, Peasley Middle School ranks No. 2 in the region, and Gloucester High School ranks No. 5 overall, including No. 1 in science mastery.

The newest data also show continued growth in other important areas. Over the past two years, Career and Technical Education completers increased 49 percent, state licensures increased 223 percent, Dual Enrollment (DE) increased 62 percent, Advanced Placement (AP) course enrollment increased 75 percent, and AP tests taken increased 119 percent.

As a reminder students in DE and AP classes have the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.

We also saw a 24 percent decline in behaviors related to school operations and a 20 percent decline in behaviors that endangered the health, safety, or welfare of self or others.

These results reflect a lot of focused work by our students, teachers, staff, families, and school leaders.
