Big OUB News!

A historic space is getting a brand new purpose!

Today, Commissioner Baer represented Governor Kathy Hochul to award $3.3 million to the city of Middletown to transform the Kleiner Building (former psychiatric center) into a community center.

The new center will also host BOCES programs supporting students with disabilities. With today's award, New York State has invested a total of $10 million in this project to improve the quality of life for families in the area.

Fire Safety Week is extra special at Pine Island Elementary, where one of our amazing paraprofessionals, Jaime Cunningham, is also a volunteer firefighter with the Pine Island Fire Department!

During the department’s fire safety presentation, Jaime joins her fellow volunteer firefighters in full gear. The excitement builds as she removes her helmet and mask and the students discover that the firefighting hero is their beloved Ms. Jaime!

Ms. Jaime has been a proud firefighter for two years, but her connection to the Pine Island FD goes back much further.

“I spent much of my childhood at the firehouse, and I always felt that becoming a firefighter would be part of my future," she says. "One of my favorite experiences as a firefighter is Fire Prevention Week. I love seeing the excitement and smiles on children's faces as they learn about fire safety. One of the most rewarding moments is taking off my mask and revealing myself, helping children feel more comfortable and showing them that there is a person behind the gear.”

We are so proud of Ms. Jaime for the care, courage, and dedication she brings to both her work at OUB and her service as a volunteer first responder. Thank you, Ms. Jaime, and thank you to the Pine Island Fire Department for helping make fire safety education so memorable for our students!
