Orange County RACES Member Supports Regional Communications Exercise

Orange County RACES member Greg Hatzis recently represented Orange County Emergency Services during a regional communications exercise in Erie County, serving as an evaluator and technical resource in his capacity as a New York State credentialed Auxiliary Communicator (AUXCOM).

Greg worked alongside Erie County RACES/AUXCOM members, providing guidance on communications planning, radio operations and the use of Winlink to transmit Incident Command System (ICS) forms. He also helped demonstrate how auxiliary communicators integrate with public safety agencies under the ICS structure during an active incident.

Hosted by the Western New York Interoperable Communications Consortium (WNY ICC), in partnership with NYS DHSES, the exercise brought together communications professionals from across Western New York to coordinate operations during a simulated missing child search. Participants established an Incident Command Post and two forward command posts using regional communications vehicles.

Orange County's participation highlights the importance of regional partnerships, shared expertise and continued training in all disciplines to strengthen emergency communications capabilities across New York State.

That’s a wrap on our 4th Annual Emergency Services Trunk or Treat!

On October 25th, the Orange County 911 Community Relations Committee, with the support of NY Cares Up, hosted another incredible afternoon of Halloween fun, and we couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of our community.

A huge thank you to the businesses and organizations that helped make this event possible:

Hannaford
Adams Fairacre Farms
Stop and Shop
Thruway Nissan
Empire Auto Body
Tri-State Fire Training
Doghouse Woodshop
The Hudson Valley Event Group

Thank you to all of the police, fire, EMS, and County agencies who came out, decorated their trunks, handed out candy, and helped make the day so much fun. Your creativity and enthusiasm are what make this event so special every year!

Congratulations to Goshen EMS, our 2026 Best Trunk Award winner! Their amazing Toy Story themed trunk was a huge hit and definitely deserved the win!

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed the afternoon with us. Seeing so many families having fun and getting to interact with the emergency services personnel who serve our community is exactly why we do this.

We are already looking forward to next year!

We’ll see you next year for Trunk or Treat 2027! 🎃👻🚓🚒🚑

🚁 The Orange County Emergency Services team, alongside DHSES, conducted monthly drone training on Hook Road in the Town of Deerpark along the Delaware River.

These exercises strengthen our pilots’ skills and improve coordination, preparing our team to support search and rescue operations, assess emergencies, and provide real-time information to first responders.

Through continued training, we remain ready to serve and protect Orange County’s residents and visitors.

The Orange County Division of Fire Services recently hosted a seminar at the Emergency Services Center focused on Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) lithium-ion battery fires, in partnership with Orange & Rockland Utilities.

The presentation was conducted by Paul Rogers and Wayne Melton of ESRG, who provided valuable information on the unique hazards, challenges, and response considerations associated with lithium-ion battery storage fires.

The seminar brought together representatives from Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, and Code Enforcement, providing an important opportunity for public safety professionals to expand their knowledge, share information, and strengthen interagency coordination when responding to these complex incidents.

As battery energy storage systems become increasingly common, continued education and collaboration are essential to ensuring the safety of our first responders and the communities we serve.

The Division of Fire Services thanks Orange & Rockland Utilities, Paul Rogers, Wayne Melton, and ESRG for their expertise and commitment to first responder education and safety.

• Orange County Board of Elections
• New York State Police
• Orange County Sheriff's Office
• Orange County Department of Public Works
