A group visited the JCC's woodshop to try something new. They cut, sanded, and hammered nails to create small planter boxes with Marnie. Lenny had participants glue pieces of prepared wood together for a cutting board. After sanding the edges, they applied mineral oil to the glued cutting boards to make them soft and smooth.

Thank you, Marnie and Lenny, for teaching Balance participants new creative activities. This process will be fun to watch as everyone grows their skills. Cathartic activities like making things can be fun and helpful in releasing or processing deep emotions like stress and anger. Seeing a creative building process from start to finish creates a low-pressure framework for practicing vital social skills, such as requesting help, sharing, active listening, and joint attention. Plus, there are some unique, beautiful cutting boards to be proud of at the end of the process.

Thursday Fall Rec had plans to visit the Pumpkin Patch, but Mother Nature had other plans. So, with a weather pivot, they went to buy pumpkins in the rain at Walmart and took them to Balance to paint. 🎃🎨🫟

During a smaller focused Martial Arts session with Instructor Jen she had them work on balance by kicking twice with one leg. The best part is seeing how much support everyone offers each other, cheering each other on while trying hard things - is the best kind of teamwork 💪!
