Native American Day is now a paid state holiday in California, thanks to a bill proposed by an Inland Empire lawmaker.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill to create the holiday, which will be the fourth Friday of September.

Though the day has been an official state holiday since 1998, it will now be paid.

“This is a reminder that Native people were the first stewards and inhabitants of this land we call California,” Ramos said in a statement. “It also serves as a small acknowledgement of the atrocities they endured and the resiliency they demonstrated in the face of adversity.”

LA’s BEST provides free expanded learning programs for students in grades TK–5 at three Council District 12 schools: Gledhill Street Elementary, Mayall Academy of Arts and Technology, and Napa Street Dual Language Elementary.

Through before-school, after-school, and summer programming, students can participate in arts, sports, STEM, literacy, wellness, and other hands-on activities in a safe and supportive environment. Applications are accepted year-round, and all students attending participating schools are eligible to apply, regardless of academic ability or family income.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency as California prepares for a potentially historic El Niño season that could bring heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, mountain snow, debris flows and dangerous coastal conditions.
Forecasters say the developing El Niño is already unusually strong and could become one of the strongest on record.
The emergency proclamation directs state agencies to prepare equipment, protect infrastructure and help local communities respond to severe winter weather.
“California is strongest when we look out for one another,” Newsom said in announcing the declaration.
The proclamation allows the state to mobilize resources, streamline emergency preparations and position equipment before major storms arrive.

Los Angeles County officials are focusing heavily on areas damaged by recent wildfires, where burned hillsides can become especially dangerous during periods of intense rainfall.

The American Red Cross is bringing its Sound the Alarm program to Granada Hills on Saturday, October 24, 2026, offering free smoke alarm installations for local residents.
Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death from home fires in half. Red Cross volunteers and community partners will install smoke alarms in participating homes and provide important home fire safety information.
Appointments take approximately 20 to 30 minutes and must be scheduled in advance.

In order to convince people to replace solo driving with mass transit, LA Metro is offering cash incentives for people to park at least one of their cars at home and try walking, bike share, carpooling or taking a train or bus.

“If the idea of getting paid to skip the car — even for a few weeks — sounds good to you, this is your chance,” wrote the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in its online magazine “The Source.” “LA’s roads (and your wallet) will thank you.”

LA Metro figures it will be no problem signing up folks — they have room for about 2,000 participants. High gas prices from the Iran-Israel War also may spur some drivers to ditch their cars for a while and save cash by avoiding the gas pump.

“We are expecting several thousand to sign up,” said Patrick Chandler, LA Metro spokesman. The agency estimates about 30% of solo car trips each day could be done by walking, carpool or by some form of public transit.

The One Car Challenge requires a household to leave a car parked for five weeks, and folks walk, use bike share or hop on a bus or train instead of solo driving

It's been 32 years since the Northridge earthquake, the last one that caused major damage to the city and county. To many it's a distant memory.
To measure its capabilities for providing services, Los Angeles County will develop an emergency preparedness plan for a large earthquake.

The plan also aims to help the county’s 10 million residents become truly prepared for a mega-quake. This includes creating a one-stop, “Know Your Risk” website acquainting residents and businesses with information, preparedness tools and reminders to participate in the “Great ShakeOut Day” on Oct. 15.

A motion by Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger, approved by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday, Aug. 4, directs the county’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) along with the Chief Executive Office Countywide Communications, to develop the plan and present it before the supervisors at their Sept. 29 board meeting.
