10 years ago, at the age of 57, I developed breast cancer. I went through the fear, the surgery, months of chemo, radiation, MRI's, and all the other appointments thereafter for the past 10 years. Last week, on my 10 year anniversary, I was officially declared cured. It's been a very long 10 years and I am proud to be a survivor.

It is essential that women get a mammogram every single year. If I had skipped that year, I'd be looking at a whole other scenario.

I am honoring myself, and those friends and family who either died of breast cancer or who have walked the journey - Dorothy Gerstner, Dorothy Gray, Pam Sunderland, Diane Hagen, Nancy, and Patti.

No one chooses breast cancer, but for those who are facing it and overcome it can inspire those around them. Two years ago, a coworker of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I witnessed firsthand the strength and courage it takes to face such a life changing diagnosis.

Her journey toward becoming cancer free is hers to share, but one thing I wanted to say was that she is one of the most courageous women I know. The way she faced her diagnosis is a strong reminder of the human spirit and the strength it takes to keep fighting, even when everything was uncertain around her.

I submit my entry for to honor this incredible woman who has shown us courage and strength throughout her breast cancer journey. This entry is a small way to recognize her strength, celebrate her journey, and honor her for the challenges she faced.
