We recently were visited by Andrea Peachey, Director of GI Expo, Events and Livestock at Fonner Park. In her role, she works with livestock shows, community events and large scale national events as venue host and mangement.
With buildings that can accomodate mulitple events in a week, having a great staff is vital during transitions. Knowing the amount of work it takes, and understanding the costs of operation, arriving at competetive pricing for a prospective client can be challenging. Advantages are that there aren't too many sites that can host the events Fonner Park does and many of those events cycle their locations. Currently, Peachey operates the non-profit using LB840 funding which is available for three years, so finding a solution to the economics is crucial to future success.
To illustrate the costs of operation, Brad Mellema with Grand Island Tourism shared that in transitioning from one livestock show to another, staff can burn through a set of skidsteer tires which cost thousands of dollars.

Join Grand Island's Rotary Clubs in a walk to end polio. This is a world record attempt, with Rotary clubs and their friends across the globe, walking at the same time. We walk so others can.
Whether you know it or not, your family was once affected by polio. From the fear of contracting it to one of your loved one suffering from it, polio has had a lasting impact.
Rotary International has been working for a long time trying to eradicate polio so it won't rear it's ugly head again. We're so close globally, but we need your help to bring an end to polio.
Please walk with us and donate if you can.

We had a great turn-out for this week's meeting, featuring speaker Chad Nabity. Chad is our long-time Regional Planner. He's the man in-the-know, with all the little secrets about who's coming (or wanting to come) to Grand Island. But, Chad explained why he can't divulge those secrets. It's about trust.
He did talk about housing stats, growth potential, TIF, zoning changes, parking minimum changes, and the Good Life District (GLD). Next week the GLD's preliminary plat will be presented - it's a game changer for the city.
On another note - Chad thanked the club for our members' help when he moved to Grand Island. Members helped him in a variety of ways, including finding a house. The kindness is why he's so invested in the community and made Grand Island his family's permanent home.

We missed posting last week's On the Road with Rotary. Our members and our exchange student were treated to a tour of the Nebraska Law Enforcement Center in Grand Island. It's a pretty impressive place. Thanks to our hosts for a very interesting tour.
