๐Ÿ”‹ Charge Into Fire Safety! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Itโ€™s Fire Prevention Week, and this year weโ€™re focusing on something most of us use every day: lithium-ion batteries.

Phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, power tools, toys and countless other devices rely on rechargeable batteries. While these batteries are generally safe when used properly, damaged batteries or improper charging can create a serious fire risk.

Help protect your home with a few simple charging habits:

๐Ÿ”Œ Use the charging cord and equipment recommended by the manufacturer.

๐Ÿ”‹ Stop using batteries that show signs of damage, swelling, overheating or unusual odors.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Charge devices on a hard, stable surfaceโ€”not on a bed, couch, pillow or other soft surface.

๐Ÿšช Keep charging devices away from exits and escape routes.

โšก Unplug devices when they are fully charged and avoid overloading electrical outlets.

โ™ป๏ธ Never put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling. Take them to an appropriate battery recycling or disposal location.

Safe charging is a small habit that can make a big difference.

This Fire Prevention Week, take a few minutes to look around your home and make sure youโ€™re charging safely.

National Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 4-10, and this year firefighters are focusing on a hazard many people carry every day: lithium-ion batteries.

Each year, the Grand Junction Fire Department provides five firefighters the opportunity to attend paramedic school, investing in their professional development while strengthening the advanced medical care we provide to our community.

Firefighters interested in becoming paramedics must apply for the opportunity and be selected to participate. Those selected attend paramedic school, with GJFD continuing to pay their salary and covering the cost of the paramedic program.

Paramedics represent a specialized portion of the EMS workforce. According to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), approximately 25% of nationally certified EMS clinicians are paramedics. At GJFD, approximately 31% of our personnel are paramedics, helping ensure advanced emergency medical care is available throughout our response system.

Becoming a paramedic requires extensive classroom education, clinical experience, and hands-on training. By sending five firefighters through paramedic school each year, GJFD continues to build and maintain a highly trained workforce while providing our personnel opportunities to advance their education and careers.

After successfully completing the program and earning their certification, these firefighters return to GJFD as active firefighter/paramedics, bringing their advanced medical training directly to our crews and the patients who depend on them.
Investing in our firefighters today helps build the paramedics our community will depend on tomorrow. ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿš‘
