The Western Slope Center for Children (aka "Center for Children") provides collaborative services to child abuse victims and their families. Each year, the Center for Children serves 300+ children in cases involving child abuse allegations, ranging from sexual abuse to physical abuse & neglect, drug endangerment, witness to domestic violence & homicide, and much more. The Center for Children has a team of professionals across five core areas of service dedicated to providing child victims and their families help, hope, and healing. Working alongside strong community partnerships, the Center for Children seeks to ensure that children whose voices are silenced by their abuser will once again have them restored.

⭐️Feature Friday⭐️

This Feature Friday, we’re excited to highlight Juli Lawrence, Senior Trial Deputy District Attorney for the 21st Judicial District in Mesa County!

Juli has served with the District Attorney’s Office for five years and has been in her senior role for the past year and a half. For Juli, one of the most meaningful parts of her work is being able to provide a sense of justice to survivors of crime while holding offenders accountable.

Juli is also an important member of our multidisciplinary team (MDT), where professionals from different disciplines come together to support children and families. Her favorite part of working with the MDT is the mutual respect among its members.

As Juli puts it, “We all have very specific roles and skills that, when put together under the same roof, create a dream team to support survivors.” 💙

Outside of her work supporting survivors and seeking justice, Juli enjoys hitting the gym and riding her Harley! 🏍️

We are so grateful for Juli’s dedication, expertise, and the role she plays in our multidisciplinary team. Thank you, Juli, for all you do for survivors and our community! 💙

Today, the Center for Children would like to highlight an incredible milestone for a very valued team member. Tami Hunt, operations administrator at the Center, is celebrating her 27th year at the Center.

Tami has been an instrumental team member. She has supported thousands of children and their families, and has aided in the support and daily operations of the Center for decades.

We are truly lucky to have Tami on our team. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment is a leading example to all those that she encounters.

Thank you, Tami, for all that you do and for so many amazing years! 💙

Recently, two of our forensic interviewers reached incredible career milestones. Collbren Lang completed her 500th forensic interview, and Sierra Cramer completed her 200th.

While these milestones reflect Collbren and Sierras experience and dedication, what they represent means so much more.

Together, these milestones represent more than 700 times a child has been given a safe, supportive space to share their story. More than 700 opportunities for a child to feel heard. More than 700 interviews conducted with compassion, patience, and care during moments that can be incredibly difficult for children and families.

Forensic interviewing is work that often happens quietly, but its impact reaches far beyond the interview room. We are so proud of Collbren and Sierra for their dedication to the children and families we serve and for reaching these incredible milestones in their careers.

Here’s to 700+ stories heard, 700+ voices valued, and countless hours dedicated to helping children feel safe and supported. 💙

The Center would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Aileen Bowman, who after 30 years of service to the Mesa County SANE program, is retiring.

In the time that Aileen has been with the program, she has provided countless medical exams to children, and for the past decade has been the primary examiner for child victims of sexual abuse.

We are so grateful to Aileen for the many years of dedicated, selfless service to our community and children. Aileen will be very missed, but her service and the legacy she is leaving behind will forever be cherished.

Please join us in extending a very warm thank you and congratulations to Aileen.💙🩺

October is Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month 💜

Intimate partner violence doesn’t just affect the individuals involved—it can have lasting impacts on children, families, and entire communities.

This month, we encourage our community to help raise awareness, promote healthy and respectful relationships, share resources, and most importantly, believe and support survivors.

Every person deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported in their relationships. Together, we can help create a community where violence has no place. 💜

If you or someone you know needs support, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7:

Meet our newest intern at the Center, Brooke!

Brooke is studying Social Work at Colorado Mesa University! She is originally from California and transferred from Bakersfield College to continue her degree in Social Work. In previous years she has been involved with a non-profit in her hometown called Riverstone Wellness, located in Kernville, California. This non-profit was founded to be a place of healing through all the senses. They believe in whole body and mind health, utilizing multiple methodologies—from healing arts to creativity—to foster connection and self-care, together as a community. Brooke spent her time there co-facilitating psycho education groups, assisting with community events/outreach, and co-leading different courses offered. She is excited to shadow victim advocacy and support children and families.

In her free-time she loves to fly-fish, cook, rock climb and works as an Outdoor Trip Leader at the CMU Outdoor Program.

We are excited to have Brooke interning with us!
