Reason 1,353,601 why I love West Michigan! Building and maintaining a resilient community doesn’t start with the government. It starts with us!

Like when your neighbor stops by unexpectedly to say hello and drop off two giant butternut squashes for you and your brother and sister-in-law’s family.

I think we often abdicate our personal responsibilities to government organizations. (And let’s be honest, that’s the “easy” path to take.) We’ve become so comfortable in doing so that we forget the fabric of a healthy community is woven by everyday people like you and me.

Wave to your neighbors when they pull into their driveway after work, take a few extra seconds out of your day to chat with people, smile at others in the grocery store.

If we all commit to that… we’ll be just fine! 🍠🥬🥕

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes this week! 🎁🎊

My day was spent door knocking and making some campaign phone calls, then I topped off my evening attending a candidate forum hosted by Disability Advocates of Kent County. I enjoyed getting to spend some personal time with other candidates to discuss a number of various policy matters. A bit of an unconventional way to celebrate, but wouldn’t have it any other way!

Phew, what a whirlwind of a weekend!

Thanks to Together West Michigan for the invitation to participate in their candidate forum on Saturday morning. I had a blast catching up with several of my former City Commission colleagues and other local representatives that I worked with during my years at City Hall.

Sunday I was able to catch up with siblings and close family friends over brunch at Westside Social… one of my local favorites!

With tomorrow marking 3 weeks until Election Day, I’m feeling more determined than ever. 😏

Running to represent a constituency means being willing to enter into conversations and spaces where you may disagree.

The audio in this clip isn’t super clear, but I was proud to highlight a few key priorities discussed, including public transportation.

Transportation is the #2 cost for Michigan families, right behind housing. Addressing the affordability crisis in our state means looking at total costs incurred by Michiganders holistically.

I’ll support legislation that makes affordable public transportation more accessible for people from all walks of life.

During the event’s invocation, the reverend prayed for wisdom with the hope that we can “create a society where every single individual can thrive.”

I wholeheartedly believe this is within our reach. I finished by saying, “while we may not agree on the ideas that will bring us from Point A to Point B, I’m committed to seeing that prayer become our reality.”

I received one certain response for the first time tonight as I spent some time out on the west side of Grand Rapids.

“It’s not often that I get an actual candidate showing up at my door. I sincerely wish you the best of luck, but I’m not voting this time. I’m just too disgusted with what I see proposed from both sides right now.”

It made me sad, but honestly, I can’t say I entirely blame him. Millions of Michiganders feel the same way right now too.

I often tell people tongue-in-cheek: my biggest value proposition as a candidate is that I also hate politics. I just love Michigan.

Things feel chaotic at all levels of government, and I experience that too. Nonetheless, I remain steadfast in the hope for a brighter future for our state and country, and I know one day we’ll heal as a nation from the vitriol we see.

If that puts me on an island, so be it! Just find me a coconut and a nice beach chair in the meantime. 😌

With one month left until the election in November, I’ve been in reflection mode a lot! I’m so grateful for the friends, family, and organizations who have gone out of their way to support me doing something crazy like running for State Representative in a district with a lot of eyes on it this cycle.

I truly couldn’t do it without your support and encouragement! Not all days on the campaign trail are glamorous, nor fun, but weekends like this are what keep my “why” at the forefront of my mind.

Politics doesn’t have to be malicious. I’ll admit, it’s easy to be tempted to fall into the toxic rhetoric myself sometimes. Ultimately, though, I’m doing this for my community to have a better future, and for every West Michigander to have a fair shot at the American Dream.

I’m so grateful for MLive.com to cover my race, which includes formal responses from my opponent and I on some critical issues Michiganders are facing.

Moral of the story: more spending doesn’t mean better outcomes. Other states are doing far better with far less money out of your pocket, and that’s what I plan to recreate for us in Lansing.

During campaign season, Sundays are for a little R&R. This morning, I got to go visit my alma mater Grand Valley State University to see my brother’s entry at LakerCon!

Let’s just say one of us genetically hogged all of our family’s illustration abilities… and it was definitely not the other three of us brothers. 😂
