This past weekend, we responded to a unique call—ducklings trapped in a manhole.

With the help of some amazing community members, we were able to safely retrieve every single one. It’s moments like these that remind us how special our community truly is.

Great teamwork and a happy ending for all!

Seeing kids light up like this - when the bay doors open, the lights flash, and the “wee-woos” hit—is something that never gets old. Those moments stick with them, too. You’re not just showing them a truck, you’re building trust and maybe even inspiring a future firefighter.

The Plainfield Township Fire Department has coordinated another staged demonstration at Comstock Park High School. The demonstration was made possible by the Alpine Township Fire Department, Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Life EMS Ambulance, Rockford Ambulance, Aero Med, and the Kent County Prosecutor's Office. The vehicles used in the scene were donated by Berry’s & Gillikin’s Towing, and Pederson Funeral Home provided the casket.

“We want to thank all of our partners for donating their time and resources to make this happen. If this experience convinces even one student to put the phone down, hand over their keys, or call for a safe ride home, all the work is worth it,” Jessica Herrington, Fire and Life Safety Educator for Plainfield Township Fire Department.

With lights flashing and sirens sounding, fire engines, ambulances, and cruisers from Plainfield Township, Alpine Township, Rockford, and Kent County converged at Northview High School. Hundreds of students looked on as first responders peeled back layers of a mangled car that rested in the school parking lot, making their way to the teenagers inside.

This was a demonstration orchestrated in hopes of preventing such a scene from becoming a reality.

Every year as prom night nears, the Plainfield Township Fire Department partners with neighboring agencies and businesses to give Northview’s junior class an up-close look at the potential consequences of driving while under the influence and distracted.

“You know it’s fake, but then when you’re seeing your friends and these girls you’ve known for years loaded into ambulances covered in blood, it doesn’t feel fake. It feels real. So don’t drink and drive,” one of the actors said, earning applause from fellow students.

Today is administrative professionals day, and we would like to take a moment to recognize Kathy, the heart behind our department.

We like to say she’s the real boss, and in many ways, she is! She is the steady presence behind the scenes, the one who keeps everything moving, organized, and supported so our crews can focus on serving others.

You make this place better just by being you!
