Effective May 24, 2026, K9 Eli will be retiring, and Sgt Justin Kribs will be leaving the K9 Team for another assignment.
Sgt Kribs began his K9 career in 2012 with K9 Bobby. In the spring of 2018, Sgt Kribs partnered with K9 Eli and served the City of Grand Rapids until May 24, 2026. Throughout his K9 career, Sgt Kribs has assisted in hundreds of K9 deployments. Whether it be through narcotics detection or locating suspects, Sgt Kribs consistently displayed his dedication to providing the citizens of Grand Rapids, and his fellow officers, the best possible K9 asset.
K9 Eli is retiring after 8 years of dedicated service. K9 Eli is responsible for multiple arrests including the most violent the city had to offer. Most notably was a barricaded suspect on Leonard St in the fall of 2022 where K9 Eli was responsible for locating a wanted suspect secreted in a basement and armed with a knife. K9 Eli sustained multiple life-threatening stab wounds but thanks to Sgt Kribs, the fast actions of the Special Response Team, and excellent medical care of The Animal Emergency Hospital, K9 Eli made a full recovery. K9 Eli was awarded the Combat Star for his actions in this incident which, without question, protected officers from a possible deadly force encounter.
Please join me in thanking both Sgt Kribs and K9 Eli for their dedicated service the city of Grand Rapids and the Grand Rapids Police Department. We wish Eli a long and healthy retirement with his family. He is a good boy.

Rideshare Update ππ
π€ We heard your feedback about the rideshare restriction zone and pickup/drop-off location, and we worked with GRPD and our Traffic Safety team to adjust.
πΉ The rideshare restriction geofence is reduced, specifically reopening access to most late-night businesses in the area.
πΉ Our initial strategy with rideshare restrictions was to mitigate congestion and alleviate traffic/pedestrian safety concerns, but after hearing your feedback we worked out a more balanced approach.
πΉ The designated pickup/drop-off zone is now on Fulton St. Bridge AND Cesar E. Chavez Ave. beneath USβ131, between Oakes & Cherry (see map below). This location is more central to nearby businesses and reduces walk times.
πΈ Reminder: All rideshare pick-ups/drop-offs that start or stop within the geofenced area will be redirected to the designated pick-up/drop-off zone.
β FYI: We've confirmed these changes will be live in Lyft for the Friday, 5/15 show. Uber confirmation is still pending. Check your rideshare app for the most up to date information.

GRPD officers volunteered at Special Olympics Michigan's first-ever stand-alone Unified Day at Michigan State University. The event, featuring three Unified sports, brings together hundreds of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to compete side-by-side in a celebration of teamwork, inclusion, and sport. As part of Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, our officers assisted with medal ceremonies for bocci, track and field, and pickleball. Great work to all involved!
