What happens when second graders and high schoolers become pen pals for an entire school year? Pure magic!

Mrs. Mast's Orchard View second graders and Dr. Keller's Central High School Honors Pre-AP English 1 students spent the year exchanging letters, sharing their worlds, and building real friendships across the district. The year wrapped up with a meet-up at Orchard View and a trip to the zoo, where students worked together to observe animals, collect data, and write stories side by side. "We couldn't even stop talking," said Chaitra, a 2nd-grade student, about her pen pal Gabi. "It was the best day of my life," said Miles, a 2nd-grade student. One student even asked his pen pal if he could come over to play the next day, and if they could go fishing together sometime. Beyond the writing skills both groups strengthened, these students will carry something even bigger with them: the memory of the year they made a brand-new friend.

Our Transition Center student made the spotlight for her work at Beer City Dog Biscuits! The goal of our program is to focus on areas to help young adults with developmental disabilities transition into daily living, community participation, employment, continuing education, and more! Thank you, Beer City Dog Biscuits, for this meaningful partnership.

🌟🌟 SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY 🌟🌟 Meet our friend Katarina!

Katarina comes to Beer City Dog Biscuits on Wednesday afternoons with her group from Forest Hills Public Schools Transition Center, and she has done just about every task in our kitchen.

She has helped make dog biscuit dough, fill molds, label bags, weigh and fill bags, and even go out on deliveries with us 🚚 Katarina is such an asset in the kitchen!

Katarina lives in Ada with her parents, two siblings, cousin, and two dogs 🐾 In her free time, she loves playing music and games on her iPad, working on sticker books, doing diamond art, and making crafts She also rides horses, plays basketball with Special Olympics Michigan, and plays baseball with West Michigan Miracle League.

When it comes to food, Katarina’s favorites are broccoli cheddar soup, fettuccine alfredo, and fish. She also loves musicals, kids’ songs, and popular music.

Fun fact: Katarina has been riding horses since she was six years old! 🐎

When we asked Katarina which task she likes best at BCDB, she said, “I like filling the bags so dogs can get their treats!” 🐶🦴 She also shared that one skill she has learned here is how to make dog biscuits.

Katarina, thank you for all that you do at BCDB. We are so grateful to have you in our kitchen each week. Keep up the good work! 🌟🌟
