Job fair helps those with criminal records find employment A second chance can make a tremendous impact on a person’s life.

"A framework to allow individuals with a prior felony conviction to pursue employment at the Michigan Department of Corrections will be created under legislation signed by Gov. Rick Snyder.

'Reforming our criminal justice system to better prepare those with a previous felon conviction for the workforce is important to help ensure their successful reentry into society,' Snyder said."

EXCITING CHANGES ARE COMING TO CJC!
CJC has developed a new relationship with 70x7 Life Recovery, a Christian faith based program based in Holland, MI. This new relationship will enhance the services of CJC, as well as 70x7, as we move to meet the increasing need for our services in the greater Grand Rapids area. We will continue with the same great programs we currently offer and enhance what we offer with 70x7's programs. A formal announcement with more details will be made at our 37th Annual Dinner on Thursday, November 9, 2017. An ice pop factory in Wheeling, West Virginia, called Ziegenfelder Corporation, recently embraced hiring practices that ignore felony status and addiction history. CEO Lisa Allen said about 20 percent of her employees have some sort of legal or drug history but Allen doesn’t consider that background important hiring information.

“What’s relevant is behavior, commitment, values, hard work, helping each other, those kinds of things. You do that and you’re welcome here," she said.

Can compassion have economic benefits? Louisville, Kentucky, is providing compassion training in public schools and the city’s jail.

Interested in learning more about Mentoring? This is a rewarding opportunity to be a friend and guide to a person returning from incarceration who also wants to take this step. CJC is offering a Mentor Orientation and Skills Training on August 8. Normally a class offered over two evenings, this combined class will be held during the day from 9 am - 2pm.
