The Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund providing up to eighteen $2,000 scholarships to students pursuing careers in law enforcement. The scholarship program is made possible through the coordinated efforts of Minnesota’s 87 elected Sheriffs.
The MSA recognizes both the importance of preparing future peace officers for careers in law enforcement and the financial challenges students may face while completing the education and training required to enter the profession.

A Mandated POST Skills Program
The second year of a two-year law enforcement program
The third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program

Students in a two-year program must have completed at least one year of the program, and students in a four-year program must have completed at least two years.
Application Deadline: November 30, 2026
Applicants should carefully complete all portions of the application. Applications must be typewritten or clearly printed in ink, and incomplete or illegible applications will not be considered. PRESS RELEASE

Mesabi Metallics Bomb Threat Investigation

The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Nashwauk Police Department and with consulting assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has been investigating a reported bomb threat involving the north side of the Mesabi Metallics property.

Law enforcement has taken this matter seriously from the outset. Deputies and officers have searched areas associated with the reported threat, followed up on information received during the investigation, and consulted with our federal partners.

Based on the investigation and information gathered at this time, I have determined that the reported threat is not credible.

While we have reached this determination, we will continue to take any information involving threats to our businesses, employees, and community seriously. We also ask employees at Mesabi Metallics and members of the public to remain aware of their surroundings. If you see something suspicious, say something. Please report concerning activity or information to law enforcement so it can be properly evaluated.

I want to thank the deputies and officers from the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office and Nashwauk Police Department, as well as our federal partners with the FBI, for their cooperation and assistance throughout this investigation.

National Emergency Management Awareness Month

August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month, a time to recognize the professionals who work year-round to help keep our communities prepared, resilient, and ready for the unexpected.
Here in Itasca County, we are proud to recognize and thank John Linder, Itasca County Emergency Manager, for his dedication and service to our communities.
Emergency management is work that often happens long before an emergency ever occurs—and continues long after the immediate response is over. From identifying risks and developing plans to coordinating resources, building partnerships, supporting response efforts, and helping communities recover, emergency managers play an important role before, during, and after disasters.
John’s work brings together public safety agencies, local governments, community partners, businesses, volunteers, and others with a shared goal: keeping Itasca County prepared and resilient.
This National Emergency Management Awareness Month, we thank John for his commitment to Itasca County and recognize emergency management professionals everywhere for the important work they do each day.
Thank you, John, for all you do for Itasca County!
