We’re boosting wildfire response across rural Oregon by transferring multiple fire vehicles to local partners through the Rural Fire Readiness Program!

Lake Chinook Fire & Rescue, Bakeoven-Shaniko Rangeland Fire Protection Association, and Vale RFPA each received a Type-6 fire engine, while South Gilliam County Rural Fire Protection District received a command truck.

These engines arrived fully equipped with hoses, fittings, radios, and more. Type-6 engines are compact and agile, perfect for rugged terrain, while command trucks support rapid response, communication, and safety oversight.

All equipment was provided at no cost through the USWFS Rural Fire Readiness Program, which supports local partners with training, tools, and vehicles to strengthen wildfire response across private, state, tribal, and federal lands.

These are just a couple of tools fire managers use to make decisions regarding fire season, and outdoor burning.

The first is fire danger indices

If you look at Monument for example, you can see we’re in High. What does this mean? Fire danger indices evaluate various factors that influence wildfire risk, including fuel moisture, temperature, humidity, wind speed, and precipitation. These factors are integrated into numerical systems like the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) to provide a comprehensive assessment of fire danger levels. Currently we are 3 - High, which means fires spread readily and fire restrictions are typically in effect (no outdoor debris burning or burn barrels).

Next is the 6-10 day outlook.

You can see we’re going to be leaning above normal for temperatures through the next 6-10 days, while precipitation is forecast to be near normal.

Finally, you see the last time we had measurable rain. Most reporting stations in the area are showing 25+ days without measurable rain.

These and other factors are tools we use to make decisions regarding when to terminate fire season and open up burning. We are extremely dry and showing no signs of changing. Since October 1st when many Central Oregon agencies opened up outdoor burning, we’ve seen an increase in human caused wildfires (mostly escaped debris burns and abandoned campfires in the forest).

Community Notice:

In conjunction with Central Oregon Fire Management Service the Oregon Department of Forestry, Prineville Unit, Sisters Sub-Unit and Fossil Sub-Unit will be increasing our fire danger signs to High on Wednesday October 7, 2026. With upcoming and continued warm and dry pattern through the week there is an increase in fire risk. As of this time since ODF is still in Fire Season. We ask that everyone take extra precautions when out using saws, mowing, w**d eating, etc… Since October 1st, Central Oregon has seen an increase in human caused fires mainly escaped debris burns.

💗 THINK PINK. STAND STRONG. FIGHT TOGETHER. 💗

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Lake Chinook Fire & Rescue is proud to show our support for everyone impacted by breast cancer.

Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, and a community touched by this disease. We stand with those currently fighting, honor those who have fought, and remember those we’ve lost.

To the survivors, fighters, families, caregivers, and loved ones: we’re standing with you. 💗

Let’s continue raising awareness, supporting one another, and reminding those around us that no one has to face this fight alone.

From our LCFR family to yours, we’re thinking pink this October. 🎀
