NOTICE OF CITY OFFICE CLOSURE ON MONDAY DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS. Due to the 14-inch snow cover affecting most areas of Granite City and ongoing efforts to maintain safe conditions, city offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday. Despite continuous efforts by our plowing teams, the persistent wind and powder snow have hindered progress on clearing streets. The application of salt has proven ineffective in these temperatures, as it melts the snow only to immediately turn into ice, creating hazardous conditions. Consequently, our public works crews are prioritizing main streets and snow routes. To ensure the safety of both employees and citizens, and to allow public works to focus on critical tasks, all non-emergency city offices will remain closed. We advise everyone to stay home, prioritize their safety, and allow our teams to address the situation. Mayor Parkinson

What a blessed ending to one of the worst days I have had as the Mayor of Granite City. I watched my police officer and his family go through something that should NEVER happen in a civilized society. I thank God that our hero will survive.
I watched a blue wave roll through this city that sent a message to everyone that this criminals cowardly actions WOULD be met with consequences.
I saw the best of my fellow human beings who were pledging their support for our hero, offering food, offering information, and saying prayers.
I saw the worst in my fellow human beings who were on social media posting their pleasure in an officer down, and one special man who refused to stop live streaming our police as they were preparing to enter through a front door hoping to find this dangerous criminal but not knowing what waited behind that door. This special man didn't care that a dangerous person could be watching his live feed from behind that door and would have the ability to harm another officer knowing when and where they were entering. You sir need to understand that your right to do something should never outweigh the common sense of whether it is right to do something! I thank God today that your selfishness did not harm another officer.
I now pray that this criminal will see what justice looks like when you do such a cowardly act upon hero's who were only coming to help you.
I pray that our legislature finds a way to move back to the days that laws were in place to make it tough on criminals and not tougher on our heros. I pray we make laws that prohibit the actions of the special person described above who did not care about the safety of my officers. I pray that they realize that this event would not have happened if this coward had already been locked up.
Lastly, I pray, and ask all of you to pray, that when the injuries heal, so do my hero's minds. That our injured officer, his family, and his partners all heal from a day most never have to experience! I ask that you pray for those other families who's hero did not make it home.
God bless the men and women in blue, God bless The City of Granite City.

When you hear the news that US Steel is firing up our blast furnace, please realize that not one person worked harder for our city and workers than Nikki Budzinski. Her fire and determination is inspiring, I am not sure any of this would have happened if not for her leadership. There are many people who fought but none, more than Nikki!
Thank you Nikki

U. S. Steel to Restart Granite City’s Blast Furnace B to Support Customer Demand
December 04, 2025

PITTSBURGH, December 4, 2025 – Driven by customer demand and as part of the Company's ordinary course of business planning, U. S. Steel has begun the process to restart the operation of one of two blast furnaces (“B”) at Granite City Works.

“After several months of carefully analyzing customer demand, we made the decision to restart a blast furnace,” said David B. Burritt, President and CEO of U. S. Steel. “Steel remains a highly competitive and highly cyclical industry, but we are confident in our ability to safely and profitably operate the mill to meet 2026 demand. We look forward to partnering with all stakeholders, including the United Steelworkers and elected officials, to ensure a safe and efficient start up and to discuss support for Granite City Works.”

I could not be more proud of our public works employees and the job they continue to do for our city. I had other city and county leaders, as well as county business owners in town yesterday for events and all of them commented how much better our roads were than other areas. Well done, you all make me very proud and you should be proud of yourselves as well.

Thank you to all the Veterans. One of my driving motivations to run for political office was to serve the people I represent. I have always felt a bit of disappointment that I never served my country. I worked alongside other police officers, like Granite City Assistant Chief Chuck Bremer, hung out alongside my buddy Scott Moss, shared many beers with Karl Schulz, all who shared countless stories of their time spent serving in branches of our Armed Forces. Heroic stories, funny stories, scary stories, but all life stories earned while serving this great nation. I am forever grateful to them and to all that have served and especially grateful to those who served and didn't make it back to share their stories. You all are my hero, my motivation to be better, and mostly my motivation to serve you now.
Thank you all!
Happy Veterans Day
