"Bend-La Pine Schools has a policy prohibiting fi****ms on school property, including those carried by law-abiding individuals with concealed handgun licenses. That policy was adopted in December 2021 under authority granted by Oregon law.

Yet today, someone intent on committing an act of horrific violence entered a school with a fi***rm despite that prohibition. We must be willing to examine whether our current policies adequately protect our children and whether they unnecessarily restrict the ability of responsible, law-abiding individuals to respond when innocent lives are in immediate danger.

These are questions that deserve thoughtful, serious consideration as the facts become clear. Our children deserve more than assurances that their schools are safe. They deserve policies that genuinely protect them." -Connie Whelchel, Chair, Oregon Republican Party
