Some moments are bigger than the game.
Last night, during a junior high football game between Preble Shawnee and Tri-County North, a young athlete suffered an injury that required emergency medical attention.
But in the midst of a frightening situation, something truly remarkable happened.
Players, coaches, and students came together on the field, setting aside their rivalry to kneel in prayer and support an injured fellow athlete. In that moment, there were no opposing teams. Just young people showing compassion, unity, and genuine concern for one another.
As adults, we sometimes spend so much time talking about what young people are doing wrong that we forget to recognize all the things they’re doing right.
This was one of those moments that deserves recognition.
To the young athletes from both schools: Your character, compassion, and sportsmanship spoke louder than anything that could have happened on the scoreboard. You demonstrated what it means to be a teammate, a leader, and, most importantly, a good human being.
To the coaches, parents, teachers, and other adults who are helping shape these young people: Your influence matters. The values you instill, the examples you set, and the lessons you teach extend far beyond the football field. Moments like this are a reflection of that impact.
As first responders, we see people come together during some of life’s most difficult moments. Seeing that same compassion and sense of community demonstrated by our young people is something worth celebrating.
We join both communities in wishing the injured athlete a full and speedy recovery.
Well done, young men. Well done, coaches. And well done to everyone helping raise a generation that understands that character matters more than winning.
You made your communities proud. ❤️🖤
