On 10/5/2026 at approximately 1409 hours, the Sheriff’s Office responded with Gray and New Gloucester Fire/ Rescue(s) to the area of 78 Bull Run Road in the Town of Gray for an industrial/commercial accident. The incident location was a petroleum pipeline, rite of way, in the wooded area behind this property.

MEDIA RELEASE

Incident Date: 09/16/2026
Incident Time: 7:50 PM
Incident Location: Long Hill Road, Gray, ME

On September 16, 2026, at approximately 7:50 PM, deputies with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to Long Hill Road in the Town of Gray in reference to a third-party report of a possible crash in the area.

Upon arrival, deputies located a red 2012 Ford Escape in the wooded area off the north side of the roadway. It appears that, while traveling westbound on Long Hill Road, the operator was unable to negotiate a sharp curve, which caused the vehicle to go off the right side of the road. The vehicle became airborne, colliding with several trees, and came to rest on its right side against a large tree.

The operator, who was identified as 57-year-old Kevin Austin of Gray, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation; however, it does appear that speed and alcohol were factors. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Gorham Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit and Gray Fire Rescue.
