Rope Rescue Technician Training

This past week, members of the Great Bend Fire Department Technical Rescue Team joined firefighters and rescue personnel from departments across Kansas for a weeklong Rope Rescue Technician course at the Great Bend Fire Department Training Grounds.

This hands-on training provides valuable knowledge and skills needed to safely and effectively respond to a variety of rope rescue emergencies. Training alongside other departments also strengthens teamwork and coordination, helping ensure responders are better prepared when these challenging incidents occur.

GBFD Training – Week of October 5th

October 7th – Live Fire Training

GBFD hosted several volunteer fire departments from Barton County at our Training Grounds for live fire training. We are always happy to work alongside our neighboring departments and help provide valuable training opportunities to strengthen our region’s emergency response capabilities.

October 8th & 9th – Electrical Emergency Training

GBFD participated in simulated electrocution drills with Wheatland Electric. This training provided a valuable opportunity for our personnel to work alongside Wheatland Electric employees and review procedures for responding when a utility worker is electrocuted while working on energized power lines.

Thank you to Wheatland Electric for working with us to improve safety, strengthen teamwork, and better prepare for emergencies in our community!

This past Sunday, GBFD hosted our annual Retirees Lunch at Station 2.

It was a great opportunity to spend time with some of the men who have proudly served the Great Bend Fire Department and our community over the years.

Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and join us. We truly appreciate your years of service, dedication, and the lasting impact you have made on GBFD.

This morning, Great Bend Firefighters honored the brave men who answered the call on September 11, 2001.
On- and off-duty GBFD members gathered at Great Bend High School’s Memorial Stadium to climb the equivalent of 110 floors, honoring the 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice that tragic day.
As we remember those who were lost on September 11, we also remember the many first responders and others who continue to lose their lives from illnesses and cancers linked to the recovery and cleanup efforts at Ground Zero.
We encourage everyone to take a moment today to remember the 343 firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority officers, and thousands of innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We will never forget

Structure Fire – September 11, 2026
200 Block of Chestnut Street

At approximately 202, Great Bend Fire & EMS units were dispatched to the report of a structure fire in the 200 block of Chestnut Street.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-wide mobile home fully involved in fire. Crews also found a large amount of miscellaneous items and debris surrounding the home that were on fire as well. The fire was threatening two nearby mobile homes, one of which was occupied at the time.

Due to the fire conditions, crews took a defensive approach. Multiple hose lines were deployed simultaneously to knock down the fire and protect the surrounding structures.

The mobile home was not occupied, and there were no utilities connected to the residence at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Great Bend Fire & EMS was assisted on scene by the Great Bend Police Department, Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, Wheatland Electric, and Kansas Gas.
