120th Airlift Wing Commander, Col. Jason Green, along with deputy commander, Col. Maureen Maphies, and Command Chief Master Sgt. Coltin Sweeney visited the 186th Airlift Squadron, Saturday, Oct. 3, for a pre-flight operations brief. Col. Green, a C-130 pilot himself, is no stranger to these briefs, but for Col. Maphies and Chief Sweeney it demonstrated the amount of detailed planning that goes into every minute of flight time long before the wheels are up.

For those unfamiliar, the unit designation of the 𝟏𝟖𝟔𝐭𝐡 Airlift Squadron may stand in stark contrast with the 𝟏𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 designation of every other unit on base - so let's explain!

In June, 1947, the 𝟏𝟖𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧 was established at Gore Field - now the Great Falls International Airport - taking its name from units that fought across the skies of Western Europe in both World Wars.

The unit expanded to the 𝟏𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 (𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞) in 1955, then to the 𝟏𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐠 in 1995, and finally the 𝟏𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐠 in 2014, with the 186th remaining as the Montana Air Guard's flying unit as it has continued to grow and evolve.

We're proud of every single Airman who makes it through basic training, but this graduation was a little extra special. 🤌
TSgt Gange's "little" cousin Dane Lackner recently graduated from BMT. He will be joining us in Supply later this week, and we can't wait to welcome him to the Air Guard family!
