Today marks twenty-five years since the devastating events of September 11, 2001.

2,977 lives were lost, including 343 firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority Police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice answering the call of duty.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember their courage, honor their sacrifice, and carry their memory forward. Throughout our community, members of the department have been participating in remembrance ceremonies to pay tribute the lives of all who were lost that day, and to honor all of the first responders whose courage, gallantry, and intrepidity in the face of unimaginable danger stand as a lasting testament to the highest ideals of service to which we should all aspire.

We will never forget.

Early this morning, the Great Neck Alert Fire Company was alerted to a motor vehicle accident with reports of trapped and unresponsive occupants due to an overturned vehicle. Our firefighters quickly responded to the scene but were lucky to discover that both occupants were conscious and were able to make their way out of the vehicle. Our firefighters worked to secure the vehicle and mitigate any hazards while also working with and Hatzolah EMS personnel to assess and treat the patients involved. Kings Point PD was on scene providing assistance as well.

While we were fortunate that it was not required this morning, our firefighters were ready to execute any type of extrication operation that would have been needed. Great Neck Alert firefighters regularly train in multiple extrication techniques so that they are always ready to perform rescues, even when it is a complex operation and they had just been asleep ten minutes prior.

If you think you have what it takes to train and work in this type of unpredictable environment where you need to always be prepared for anything, we’d love to have you. Visit alertfd.org to learn more about us and to fill out an application.

Check out our firefighters training with our new bailout prop!

Bailing out is an emergency technique that a firefighter can use to rapidly exit a building should the fire become untenable and cut off other means of egress.

If you would like to join the team and learn skills like this, visit alertfd.org and fill out an application. We look forward to hearing from you.

At 15:29 on March 19, 2026 the Great Neck Alert Fire Company was alerted to a reported structure fire at 444 Middle Neck Road. Chief of Department Gallo was first on scene and transmitted a working fire for fire on the third floor of an apartment complex. Great Neck Alert firefighters were on scene within minutes and quickly extinguished the fire, searched adjoining apartments, and ensured that the fire did not spread further throughout the building.
