Good news- the Skeeter Meter remains low in Suffolk County, but we aren’t out of the woods quite yet.

While the risk of West Nile virus has decreased, it is still possible to catch WNV from an infected mosquito.

This time of year, it’s important to remember that reducing standing water is an effective way to lower the risk of mosquitoes on your property. Remember to regularly check items such as children’s toys, buckets, flowerpots and saucers, old tires and tarps and any excess water.

Chilly temperatures did not stop runners during the annual Suffolk County Marathon, and it certainly did not stop the Suffolk County Department of Health Services staff from cheering them on.

Members of SCDHS gathered at Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore during the post-run celebration to support the participants and share essential public health resources.

The event was an opportune moment to work with the community to continue to build a healthy Suffolk County. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello!

👻 Spooky season is officially here and that means it’s time for Halloween celebrations, such as parties or Trunk-or-Treat events.

While children aren’t going to door-to-door trick-or-treating just yet, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services is offering these safety tips for children during their Halloween celebrations:

🎃 Do not allow young children to have toys or candy that could present a choking hazard.

🎃 Adults should inspect candy before children eat it to check for allergens and other concerns.

🎃 To prioritize safety for children, choose face paint instead of masks and ensure costumes are well fitting and do not pose tripping hazards.

🎃 Aim for light-colored costumes and add reflective tape to optimize visibility.

Autumn is in full swing, and the Skeeter Meter is still low in Suffolk County. This means the risk of West Nile virus has gone down, but officials are still finding some WNV samples in our area.

When spending time outdoors, it’s important to take precautions against mosquitos and the diseases they may carry.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services is reminding individuals about the importance of regular screenings.

Undergoing regular breast cancer screenings and telling your doctor about any changes you notice in how your breasts look or feel are important steps to detecting breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat.

• Start at 40: Individuals at average risk are recommended to begin getting screening mammograms at age 40.
• Screening is for everyone: Routine screening is important for everyone, as the vast majority of women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease.
• Coverage Options: The New York State Breast Cancer Screening Law requires most insurance plans to cover breast cancer screenings with no copays. Many screening options are available at nights and on weekends.
• Know Your Options: If you don’t have insurance, contact the Cancer Services Program of Suffolk County at 631-548-6320 to see if you have the option for a free screening.
