It’s time to let them go!

⚠️ Motorcycle Road Safety Matters: Understanding the difference between lane filtering and lane splitting⚠️

With motorcycle fatalities remaining a critical concern on Colorado roads, safety is our highest priority. In 2024, lane FILTERING was legalized under Senate Bill 24-079 as a safety measure to protect riders from catastrophic rear-end collisions. However, lane SPLITTING remains illegal.

Everyone on the road deserves to get home safely. Here are the strict legal boundaries every driver and rider must follow:

Five rules for LEGAL lane filtering:
🛑 Traffic MUST be at a complete standstill: Passing is allowed only when vehicles ahead and in adjacent lanes are fully stopped (such as at a red light or gridlock).
🐢 15 MPH Speed Limit: Motorcyclists may not exceed 15 mph while passing stopped traffic.
⬅️ Pass on the Left: Passing must occur within the same lane on the left side of the stopped vehicle. Never pass on the right shoulder or cross center lines into oncoming traffic.
📐 Safe Clearance Required: Filtering is only legal if the lane is wide enough to maintain full vehicle control.
🔄 Re-enter Traffic Flow: As soon as traffic starts moving again, riders must stop filtering and merge back into regular traffic.

Lane splitting is ILLEGAL:
🚫 Moving traffic is off-limits: Riding between lanes of vehicles that are moving, even at slow speeds (e.g., 5–10 mph in heavy traffic), is illegal lane splitting. Traffic must be fully stopped.
🚫 No high-speed weaving or shoulder passing: Passing on the right shoulder, weaving rapidly between lanes, or passing within oncoming traffic lanes remains strictly prohibited.
⚖️ Enforcement: Unlawful lane splitting is a moving violation resulting in traffic citations, license points, and severe liability in collisions.

Understanding and abiding by the law can keep you and fellow riders safe on the roads.

📰Bicyclist Killed in Crash📰

GREELEY, Colo. – On Monday, October 12, at approximately 7:50p.m., Greeley Police officers responded to a crash involving a bicycle and a vehicle at the intersection of 11th Avenue and 4th Street.

Preliminary investigation determined a 53-year-old man was traveling eastbound on 4th Street on a bicycle, without operational headlights or tail lamps, when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign. He proceeded across the street where he was struck by a northbound white Ford Explorer, driven by a 25-year-old man.

First responders attempted life-saving measures on the bicyclist before he was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office pending next-of-kin notification. The man driving the Explorer suffered no injuries.

On-call traffic investigators responded to conduct a thorough investigation and reconstructed the scene. Video evidence of the collision was obtained, and based on the physical evidence and footage, investigators determined the bicyclist to be at fault for the collision. No charges are pending against the driver of the Explorer.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact Officer Ed Kubala at [email protected]. This remains an ongoing investigation. No further details will be released today.
