This years Fire Prevention Week focuses on safe charging practices. Lithium Ion battries have greatly expanded in societal use, and with this expansion remaing safe is paramount. These power sources are scientific leaps in providing us with todays modern convienciences. The Green Island Fire Department wants you to enjoy this technology while remaing safe in the process.
A few precautions are:

-Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces rather than beds or couches.

-Use only manufacturer-approved chargers matched to the specific device.

- Unplug devices once they are fully charged.

- Discontinue use of any battery that shows signs of damage, heat, swelling, or unusual odors.

- Charge larger e-mobility equipment outside when possible

Today, Green Island Firefighters along with our mutual aid partners were summoned to the 100 Block of 6th avenue in the City of Troy, for a residential fire with initial reports of persons trapped. Troy Firefighters quickly transmitted a second alarm, and initated an agressive interior attack on the fire. The fire had communicated into a neighboring residence and was quickly stopped form advancing into the exposure and heavy fire in the initial building was knocked down by firefighters as a result of the offensive interior attack waged by firefighters.

On Sunday night, September 27, 2026 Green Islander firefighters responded to a third alarm fire on the 1100 block of Sixteenth Street with our mutual aid partners. On initial arival Troy Firefighters encountered an advanced fire in a redential structure with persons within. Unfortunatly, despite Troy Firefighters beyond heroic efforts three people have succomed to thier injuries. We mourn the families loss and are keeping them in our thoughts. We also keep the firefighters involved in our thoughts for the extraordinary efforts displayed in this effort.

On Monday, September 14, 2026 our members along with our mutual aid partners responded to a residence on 4th avenue in Watervliet for a reported structure fire. On arrival members found a large baloon frame structure with fire and smoke showing throughout. A second alarm was transmitted and an interior attack was waged, however, due to the advanced fire conditions and questionable structural integrity resulting from the fire a defensive posture was necessitated after accounting for the residents. We are keeping the residents who have suffered such a difficult loss of property in our thoughts. On Firday September 11, 2026 our members, along with our mutual aid partners responded to a residence on Park Avenue in the City of Cohoes. The residence had heavy smoke and fire showing on arrival. This fire was deeply seated and after a time consuming, labor intensive encounter the fire was able to be contained and extinguished thankfully without injury or extension to neighorbing homes. Our thoughts go out to the residents of the home who lost much of thier belongings.
