Thanks to all my friends and associates who took the time to wish me a happy birthday on September 30th. Janet and I spent a few days celebrating in Calistoga, CA. We hiked up Mount Helena to the 3,100 ft. ev., where it was so windy that we turned around. We used the fire road, which proved to be good for birding. Sooty Fox Sparrows were being seen and heard all along the way.
In the town of Calistgo itself, we had up to twenty Evening Grosbeaks in the Chinese Pistache trees near the Community Center parking lot.

We've returned from the Western Field Ornithologists Conference. Janet Bodle and I led two field trips. One field trip we co-led with Jeff Miller was to Mountain Ashland. One of the attendees was Greg Hachigian. Greg took many great photos. He shared a few with me, and I'd like to share them with you.

We're off to the Western Field Ornithologists Conference in Ashland, Oregon. I'll be leading two field trips. But mostly, I'm attending to support the WFO. I am a lifelong member; great conferences, publications, and members. On Friday, I'm attending the class on Molt given by Ryan Terill. I never get enough time to sit down at home to study molt, so I'm taking advantage of this class Friday morning. One trip I'm co-leading with my birding buddy Jeff Miller is to Mount Ashland for high-elevation fall birding. I hope to be posting photos. Stay tuned.

While leading a group of 4 Ohio birders to the Farallon Islands, we saw 5 Tufted Puffins. Later, a biologist who had been on the Island for two weeks doing pelagic bird surveys came on board our ship for a return to the mainland. She told me that there were up to one hundred Tufted Puffins on the Farallon Islands.

While birding in the various habitats in Nome, Alaska, we spotted a Wandering Tattler at Hastings Creek. Several hours later, while on the Taylor Rd. Near Lake Solomon, we found up to three Blue Throats, an Asian migrant that every tour group wants to take home. Check mark for the Yellowbilledtours happy birders group.

Our last day in Nome was Sunday, May 31. We used the fourth day of the tour to seek out species we may have missed. On the Teller Rd. We received reports from other birders that Snow Buntings and Red Knots might be seen on the ridge between MM 34 and MM 35.
