Deshiana is an 11th grade student at GHS who is the junior class president and a member of Key Club. Currently she is reading Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear. She chose this book to read for AP Language and Composition because she knew it would be educational for her. She said the book helps you change habits by changing how you approach them and developing a reward system. A habit that Deshiana has changed as a result of reading this book is getting to school on time this year. Instead of staying in bed when she wakes up, Deshiana now immediately gets up, which she says “feels right now.” She chose this habit because she is taking AP classes and feels like she needs to be more responsible now that she is older. Also, she doesn’t want to stay stuck in her room; she’d rather be at school learning. Deshiana prefers reading nonfiction books, specifically narrative history, which she attributes to when she was in 7th grade and picked up a book on the Titanic and loved it. Her favorite book is the Bible, which Deshiana spent a whole year reading. She read both the King James and New International editions of the Bible, the former she simply read and the latter she annotated. She said reading the Bible helped her a lot, from stopping swearing to showing respect to others to staying out of drama. Deshiana likes to read to learn about history more deeply and understand different people’s perspectives. She wants to read the World War I novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque because she has watched the movie several times and has tried reading the book before, but didn’t finish it. Her favorite book that’s been turned into a movie is Twelve Years a Slave: And Other Slave Narratives because the film was so well done and had good actors. She also read excerpts of the book in Mr. Martin’s history class, which helped her see how bad slavery was. After school you might find Deshiana in her bed reading because that is where and when she most likes to read. Thanks for chatting with me about your reading interests, Deshiana. I hope this inspires other GHS readers out there. ~ Ms. Po***ck
