Over the last 72 hours, there have been two separate fatal crashes in the Monterey Area. One life lost is already too many, but losing four community members is tragic, extremely devasting, and reminds us of all the dangers motorists face daily.

Please keep these critical safety tips in mind before driving:

🔺 Buckle up: Always wear your seatbelt appropriately (3-point harness- belt across your hips & over collarbone) and ensure all passengers buckle up.

🔺Drive Sober: Never drive under the influence of alcohol, illegal or prescription drugs, or cannabis.

🔺Stay Focused: Keep your eyes on the road, put your phone away, and eliminate distractions.

🔺Watch for others: Motorcycles, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

🔺Maintain safe driving distances: A good rule is one car length for every 10 MPH that you are traveling.

Greenfield Police Department Holding DUI/DL Checkpoint on September 18, 2026.

On 09/18/2026, the Greenfield Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) and Driver’s License (DL) Checkpoint from 6PM to 10PM at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

Greenfield Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety - STEP Grant.

********

PRESS RELEASE - Amber Alert Issued for Missing 14-Year Old in Baby Angelita Investigation -

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has requested an Amber Alert for 14-year-old Diana Galvez Ortega as investigators continue efforts to locate her and her father, Sergio Galvez Perez.

The search for Diana and Sergio is connected to the ongoing investigation into the death of Baby Angelita, the newborn child who was found deceased along Struve Road on August 1, 2026. While we understand the public has many questions about the circumstances of that investigation, there are specific details and evidence that we cannot release at this time without potentially jeopardizing the investigation.

As the investigation has continued, detectives located video surveillance showing Sergio Galvez Perez and Diana in the Salinas area in a white Nissan Altima with no license plates. This newly discovered information provided investigators with vehicle information that was not previously available and confirmed that Sergio and Diana were together at that time.

We understand there have been questions about why an Amber Alert was not previously requested. Until this video was located, investigators did not have information identifying a vehicle in which Diana may have been traveling and were also unable to confirm with certainty that Diana and Sergio were traveling together. The vehicle referenced in previous Sheriff’s Office press releases was already in the custody of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Sergio Galvez Perez is wanted for numerous felony violations involving Diana, in which she is the victim. These allegations are extremely serious and are an important part of why locating Diana and ensuring her safety and well-being remain a priority.

We also understand there has been significant public concern surrounding Diana's circumstances. Diana is 14 years old, and our immediate priority is to locate her and ensure she is safe. We want to make sure her well-being is addressed and that she receives any medical care she may need.

Sergio Galvez Perez is described as a 38-year-old Hispanic male adult, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Diana Galvez Ortega is 14 years old and is described as approximately 4 feet 10 inches tall and 100 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to focus on helping us safely locate Diana. If you see Sergio Galvez Perez, Diana Galvez Ortega, or a white Nissan Altima with no license plates that may be associated with them, do not approach them. Call 911 immediately.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released when it can be shared without jeopardizing the investigation.

18-Year-Old Suffers Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound to the Buttocks

On Thursday morning, Greenfield officers responded to the 1000 block of Palm Avenue after receiving a report of a possible domestic disturbance involving a fi***rm.

Family advised that an 18-year-old male had reportedly been in possession of a fi***rm, and had left the residence with it.

Greenfield officers, with assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and Soledad Police Department, searched the surrounding area but were initially unable to locate the male.

During the investigation, officers determined there was no domestic dispute. Family members reported being awakened by the sound of a gunshot inside the residence, and the 18-year-old running out. Officers located evidence of a shooting inside the home.

Shortly after, officers received a medical aid call for the 18-year-old, who was in the 300 block of Parkside Court. Officers responded and safely contacted him.

The 18-year-old was suffering from a single gunshot wound to his buttocks.

The investigation revealed that shooting was self-inflicted.

The 18-year-old male was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation will be forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office with a recommendation for criminal charges.

We thank the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and Soledad Police Department for their assistance.

If you see something, say something, even when it involves a family member or someone you care about.

Reporting dangerous behavior involving a fi***rm could save their life or the life of someone else.
