The Greenlawn Fire District is located in the center of the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. The approximately 4-square-mile area encompasses Greenlawn, as well as parts of the hamlets of Elwood and Huntington. The district is home to roughly 15,000 residents, as well as a wide variety of properties ranging from health and elder care facilities to industrial and manufacturing businesses; from houses of worship and restaurants to a Long Island Railroad Station; and from an animal shelter to 6 public schools. This diverse district is protected by the 125 active members of the Greenlawn Volunteer Fire Department; friends and neighbors who have the desire to serve and the ability to help. Founded in 1902, the Greenlawn Volunteer Fire Department continues to be a cornerstone of the Greenlawn community. The Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics of the Department provide emergency fire and medical response from two stations; GFD Headquarters, located on Boulevard Avenue and Station #1, located on Little Plains Road. These dedicated men and women undergo hundreds of hours of training in order to provide the best service possible to those in need, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The GFD is proud to be one of the few remaining all volunteer departments in the region.

The Greenlawn Fire Department is closely monitoring the approaching nor’easter, which is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for localized flooding.

As the storm moves through our area, residents are encouraged to take precautions. Secure loose outdoor objects, charge electronic devices, avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions, and never drive through flooded roadways. Always stay clear of downed trees, wires, and utility poles.

Our members and apparatus are prepared to respond throughout the storm should emergencies arise. Please help our crews by keeping fire hydrants clear and accessible whenever it is safe to do so.

Never place yourself at risk to investigate or report hazardous conditions. In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Twenty-five years later, we pause to solemnly remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Today, we also reflect on the unwavering courage and mutual aid response of our own department as our community answered the call when our city and nation needed it most.
September 11, 2001 (11:45 AM): Members responded on 2-7-6—including Mike Zeis, Thomas Corrigan, Chief Greg Ancewicz, Scott Dalrymple, Pete Miller, and Timmy Burke, alongside Spencer Hertzel who was providing medical care after the collapse—relocating to Queens to cover Engine 299’s response area.
September 12, 2001 (3:35 AM): Engine 2-7-7 responded directly into New York City under the direction of Assistant Chief Dave Ferguson.
September 16, 2001 (6:15 PM): Ladder 2-7-4 was requested to respond to the World Trade Center staging area at the South Street Seaport, where Chief of Department DeMayo, Assistant Chief Ancewicz, Dave Caputo, Mike Zeis, Scott Dalrymple, and Danny Caputo answered the call. We also honor one of our members; NYPD ESU Officer Pete Davis (Ret), who responded to the collapse alongside his Search and Rescue K-9 partner, Apollo. As one of the first search and rescue K-9 teams on the scene, Pete and Apollo spent countless tireless hours scaling the devastating rubble in search of survivors.
The accompanying historical photos, generously provided by Pete Davis, capture a glimpse of what he and so many others encountered on that tragic day and the grueling months that followed. On behalf of the Greenlawn Fire Department we thank you for your unprecedented dedication to protecting our community and answering the call when New Yorkers needed you the most.

Mark your calendars and join us this Labor Day Weekend, September 3rd through September 6th, 2026, for four big nights of fun at the Greenlawn Fire Department Annual Fireman’s Fair!

For generations, the Fireman’s Fair has been a tradition that brings together our members, families, friends, neighbors, and visitors from across the community. We’re excited to once again welcome everyone for a great weekend while supporting the men and women of the Greenlawn Fire Department.

🇺🇸 Thursday, September 3rd — PARADE NIGHT!
Kick off the weekend with our annual parade before heading over to the fair. The fair opens at 7:00 PM.

🎡 Friday, September 4th — 7:00 PM
🎆 Saturday, September 5th — 7:00 PM
🎠 Sunday, September 6th — 5:00 PM

Throughout the weekend, enjoy rides, great food, raffles, games of chance, adult beverages, and plenty of entertainment for the entire family.

This year, we also take time to honor the bravery, sacrifice, and service of those who rushed in when others were running out. We will never forget.

Whether the Fireman’s Fair has been a family tradition for years or this will be your first time joining us, we hope to see you there. Bring your family, bring your friends, and help us make the 2026 Greenlawn Fireman’s Fair another unforgettable weekend!
