DUCK Lab- Development and Understanding of Children's Knowledge at UNCG A non-profit organization dedicated to the study of children’s social and cognitive development.

The DUCK Lab consists of a team of researchers (professors, graduate students, and undergraduate students) who are interested in several aspects of 2- to 10-year-old children’s development, such as:

*How children make social judgments about other people
*Sources of information that children use to learn about the world around them
*The ability to understand and use rules
*Memory development and behavioral control

Our research provides insight about children's skill and strategy development that informs educational curricula and interventions. Participants in our studies are volunteers in the Greensboro community who generously offer their time to help us run our studies. We greatly appreciate the support that we have received from each and every parent and child in the Greensboro community! If you haven't signed up with us already and you are interested in participating, please contact us via phone or e-mail (and direct your query to Ally, our lab manager). Visits can be arranged at your convenience – mornings, afternoons, and weekends. Studies typically take 30 minutes to 1 hour and we provide free and convenient access to parking, as well as refreshments and small prizes for your child. All of our studies are conducted as fun games that children typically enjoy and you are welcome to watch your child participate the entire time. This page will keep parents informed about ongoing research in our center and also provide scientific information and resources on child development.

It's college tour season for high school seniors as they try to find their best fit! In our latest blog for Psychology Today, we discuss the pros and cons of sorority culture, its potential effects on body image, and the important roles that moms play in helping their daughters navigate this decision.

Moms are hiring "rush consultants" for their daughters' college sorority decisions. They could better support the process by modeling intentionality and self-awareness.

Congratulations to DUCKIE graduate students Maddy Prince and Taylor Wood on completing one of the milestones in our experimental area program's "Hard Dafe Cafe:" presenting their research to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students! They did an EXCELLENT JOB on these talks and set a high bar as our first presenters.

Maddy talked about her research on children's perceptions of muscularity and masculinity, and Taylor discussed her findings on children's social judgments based on wealth and character. Both of these projects are currently in the review process for publication.

Thank you to all of our supporters for your assistance with our research. These studies required us to work with over 250 children and families individually to obtain this meaningful data and it wouldn't be possible without your generosity and willingness to share your time with us. DUCK Lab fans, We're excited to share new findings from a recently completed study that will be submitted for publication shortly! Julie Peebles, MA student and also a former dancer herself, examined body image in girls who dance ballet competitively and non-competitively. People often think about risk factors associated with participating in ballet when it comes to body image, but the data show a far more nuanced story of all of the benefits that can also come with dance participation depending on the context, as well as things that we can keep an eye on to ensure that our dancing girls are happy and healthy!

For more on building healthy body image in young girls, check out our book website for free resources/podcasts appearances at https://www.beyondbodypositive.com/
