Clean hands can make a big difference!

October 15 is Global Handwashing Day, a reminder that a simple daily habit can help protect you, your family and your community from germs and illness, including colds and flu.

Follow five steps: wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry. Use soap and clean, running water, and scrub for at least 20 seconds. Remember the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your fingernails!

Make handwashing part of your routine before eating or preparing food and after using the bathroom, coughing, sneezing or handling pets.

Find more handwashing tips in the Links section on our page.

This is an important week for the youngest drivers behind the wheel.
That’s why state law enforcement asks parents to take a greater role in their teens’ driving habits.
National Teen Driver Safety Week runs from now until Saturday October 24th .
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency wants moms and dads not just to talk to young drivers about good driving habits, but to also show them.
So drive the speed limit and limit distractions.
Teen drivers face a higher risk of fatal crashes according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
The Center for Advanced Public Safety at the University of Alabama State gave crash data to state law enforcement.
It that showed that as of October of 2026, there have been more than 18,000 crashes in Alabama involving teenagers.
71 of those crashes involve fatalities.
ALEA asks parents to set a positive example behind the wheel.
That may influence your kids to do the same.
“We’re also encouraging parents to have intentional and meaningful conversations with your teens or your inexperienced drivers before they take to the roadway. Stress to them the importance of obeying all the rules of the roadway,” explained Sgt. Reginal King.
ALEA is also taking a greater role with teen drivers this week.
State Troopers will visit schools to talk to students about safe driving habits and how they keep everyone safe on the road according to King.

October is National Children’s Health Month, a reminder that small, everyday habits can make a big difference in a child’s well-being. As Halloween kicks off a season filled with candy, parties and holiday treats, maintaining healthy routines can help children stay active, nourished and ready for the colder months ahead.

National Parenting Week also falls in October, making it a timely opportunity for families to focus on simple habits that support children’s health. Torie Ennis, community health administrator for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, shared six tips to help parents build healthy routines this fall.

“Keep it simple,” Ennis said. “Start with one small change this week, and see your family make healthy lifelong habits.
