Hello Claxton Stars! Whew, the start of this new year has been hectic, but now that things have settled just a smidge I just want to take a minute to introduce myself as the new Media Specialist. My name is Courtney Adams. I am in my 21st year in education. I spent the first 13 years teaching high school English. After getting my Masters in Library Science, I became the media specialist at Madison Elementary in 2019. I spent 7 years at Madison until we were closed and consolidated last year. Mr. Little had shared his retirement plans, and I took the opportunity to visit Claxton and see the school. Everyone I met that worked at Claxton or had kids at Claxton or was connected in some way to Claxton had amazing things to say. Mr. Little had also established a great media program with some similarities to my program at Madison and many differences that made me excited to step into a new role. I was thrilled when the county granted my placement at Claxton. Everyone has been so amazing and welcoming and I’m really looking forward to finding a new family here and getting to know all my new students. And there are so many of them! Madison was super small with only around 200 students, so Claxton is a big change and one I’m looking forward to growing into.
A little about me. I have lived in Greensboro all my life and have an amazing family here. I have a brother and a sister who have given me 6 nephews and a niece that light up my life with so much joy! You may see them around Claxton events occasionally as they are often hanging out with me and go with me to all kinds of things.
We are all very involved in our church, especially the Upwards sports programs. Basketball and baseball are our biggest sport passions though we have a little flag football and cheer thrown in there too! Most weekends find us at some type of sports game either through Upwards or travel ball.
Obviously I am a big reader. I love reading most fiction (except horror!) and I’m trying to get better at reading nonfiction. Book clubs and talking about books to other readers brings me such happiness!
Aside from reading, my 3 biggest passions are travel, the theater, and baking. I travel as much as I can afford. I love going new places or even visiting the same places to see new things. I also love all things drama related. I love attending plays and have written and directed some in the past. I am not a front and center person though! Put me backstage rather than on it. And I enjoy trying new recipes and baking old favorites. I have recipes handed down from both my deceased grandmothers that played such a big role in my childhood that are some of my favorite treats to make.
I love meeting new people, so feel free to stop by the media center if you’re in the building and introduce yourself. I’m looking forward to a great year at Claxton!

My final post as librarian at Claxton Elementary School.

Claxton Community,

It has been a long 23 years at Claxton, but it also seems to have flown by quickly. When I first started teaching in 1997, I was thinking, “Wow, I can retire in my early 50’s! I still have lots of time after that!” I'm in my 50s now, and it is time to move on. I have retired.

Since 1997, I had been trying to get a job at Claxton for 5 years. I live in the district. I wanted my son to go here. But there never were any openings. People didn’t leave this school--and with good reason. You might hear about someone leaving if their new opportunities were around the corner from their house, or if they retired, but people didn’t just…leave. After being here for so long, it is no wonder why. While things have certainly changed, especially with the building and moving, our team has always been strong. When GCS doesn’t shuffle your admin every three years, you know why. And that has been consistent since Helen Medlin in 1960.

I have loved getting books in kids' hands, putting on Book Fairs, Storyteller Saturday, the Claxton Superstar News, the Yearbook, Battle of the Books, and curating and making accessible a library that every single kid could find themselves represented in the collection and learn about others through that same collection. In addition to the traditional texts, I have intentionally ordered books that were "not of the norm," because there are kids (and teens and adults) who are "not of the norm"--kids with disabilities, body issues, LGBTQ+, kids dealing with loss, anger, horrible situations at home, racism, and everything else I encountered from our actual population. I bought and promoted books by authors and illustrators of color and with characters of color. These kids are out there and deserve the same basic level of respect for their culture, identity, or upbringing as anyone else. I did this without regard to the haters, censors, online commenters, and threats because it is THAT important. Anyone who disagrees should go read a book. I have recommendations.

Thank you, my friends, students, teachers, staff, and parents for putting up with all my nonsense, my noise and all my flexible rigidity. We have had a lot of fun. I hope I have left this place and the people behind at least a little better than when I came. I know I am better having been around you all day after day for these last 23 years.

Thank you for making the library my Happy Place.

Jason
