Grifton School is one of four Pitt County Schools that has received the Intro to Music Grant from Save The Music this year. The other schools are Lakeforest Elementary, South Greenville Elementary, and Sugg/Bundy Elementary. Each school has already received a $25,000 instrument package that includes Orff mallet instruments, ukuleles, recorders, world drums, boomwhackers, and a host of other handheld percussion instruments. The grant package also includes some upcoming training for all of our K-5/K-8 General Music Teachers.

This grant is just the first step in our involvement with the Music Impact Coalition, a partnership between over 20 of the nation’s leading music education advocacy and philanthropic organizations looking to strategically align donors with the needs of participating school districts. Pitt County Schools is one of seven NC public school districts chosen to be included in this 3-year pilot program that has already generated $3M in funding.

The site visit at Grifton School was organized to happen in conjunction with the official Music Impact Coalition launch taking place in Raleigh on October 15-16. Ms. Mourino (music teacher) and her students did an amazing job demonstrating the positive impact of this initiative.

This afternoon, we celebrated Pitt County Schools student artists who had their works selected to be on display at the East Carolina University Teacher Resource Center at Joyner Library. These masterpieces will be on display for the next year in the Teacher Resource Center, where future K-12 teachers will be inspired by the creativity and talents of these students.

Congratulations to all of the student artists who were selected as well as their teachers who guided them through the creative process.

Thanks to the ECU TRC team for putting this exhibit together and hosting today’s reception. It was great to celebrate with the students, families, art teachers, and administrators in attendance today.

“The President’s Own” United States Marine Corps Band is in concert at Wright Auditorium tonight at 7:30pm. The concert is free!!

7:00pm -doors open for ticket holders

As we conclude Arts in Education Week, Pitt County Schools would like to thank our 41 tremendous Visual Art Teachers for helping students develop their creativity as well as increase and refine technical skills. We are fortunate to have our Art classrooms taught by real life Artists who chose a life of passing along their knowledge and passion to another generation.

In 2010, Congress passed House Resolution 275 designating the week beginning with the second Sunday in September as National Arts in Education Week. During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to advocate, educate and celebrate the impact and transformative power of the arts in education.
In taking a closer look at the NC data for each of the four Arts disciplines this week, today we celebrate Visual Arts in our K-12 public schools! We'd love to see our NC visual arts programs tag us in their social media celebrations today and share with us the excellent work their students are doing!

During this Arts in Education Week, we want to recognize our Theatre Teachers for all of the work they do to inspire our students. Not only are they helping students build confidence as they act and/or sing on stage, but they help students envision and design sets, costumes, and lighting for their productions.

If you’ve never taken in a student production at one of our Pitt County High Schools, you and your family should check one out this year.
