October is National Children’s Health Month, a reminder that small, everyday habits can make a big difference in a child’s well-being. As Halloween kicks off a season filled with candy, parties and holiday treats, maintaining healthy routines can help children stay active, nourished and ready for the colder months ahead.

National Parenting Week also falls in October, making it a timely opportunity for families to focus on simple habits that support children’s health. Torie Ennis, community health administrator for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, shared six tips to help parents build healthy routines this fall.

“Keep it simple,” Ennis said. “Start with one small change this week, and see your family make healthy lifelong habits.

A sweet taste of Alabama fall!

The American persimmon is Alabama’s only native persimmon species, and its ripe fruit offers plenty of delicious possibilities.

The key is patience! Harvest only fully ripe, soft fruit. Unripe persimmons are intensely astringent and unpleasant to eat.

Use a sieve or fruit pulper to separate the sweet pulp from the seeds and skin, then enjoy it in puddings, jams, fruit butters, pies or ice cream. Freeze the pulp to save some sweetness for later.

Ripe persimmons don’t store well, so process them promptly or refrigerate until you’re ready.

Prepare now for safe cleanup after the storm. Before tackling damaged trees or fallen limbs, review Alabama Extension’s guidance on electrical hazards, chainsaw safety, and when to call a professional.

Treat all downed power lines as live. Never touch or attempt to remove trees or branches contacting utility lines.

Take a few moments now to prepare.

As Tropical Storm Isaias, pronounced ees-ah-EE-ahs, develops in the Gulf, Alabama Extension encourages everyone to review hurricane preparations at home, at work, and on the farm.

Review emergency plans and confirm important contacts.
Take steps to protect your family, property, and important records.
Prepare livestock, crops, and farm equipment.
After the storm, stay clear of fallen trees, loose debris, and downed power lines.

Monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center and your local National Weather Service office, and follow instructions from local emergency officials.
