🚨 SCAM ALERT: VIRTUAL KIDNAPPING SCAM 🚨
Imagine receiving a phone call claiming that your loved one has been kidnapped and that you must pay a ransom immediately to save them. The fear is real but the kidnapping may be completely FAKE.
Virtual kidnapping is a form of extortion in which scammers use fear, urgency, and emotional manipulation to trick people into sending money for a loved one who may not be in any danger.
⚠️ Here’s how scammers operate:
📞 AI voice cloning: They may use artificial intelligence to imitate your loved one’s voice.
📱 Personal information: They gather details from social media to make their story sound believable.
🖼️ Fake photos and videos: They may use edited images or videos to make the alleged kidnapping seem real.
🚨 Pressure and threats: They demand immediate payment and insist you stay on the phone so you cannot verify the story.
📲 Caller ID spoofing: They may make the call appear to come from your loved one’s actual phone number. Do not assume a familiar number means the call is legitimate!
🛑 HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
✅ Stay calm. Scammers rely on panic to keep you from thinking clearly.
✅ Do not send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency under pressure.
✅ If possible, use another phone to contact your loved one directly or reach out to someone who can confirm their safety.
✅ Ask questions only your loved one would know, but remember that personal details may have been stolen or shared online.
✅ Hang up if necessary and independently verify the situation through a trusted contact. If you believe someone may be in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement.
✅ Consider establishing a family code word that can help verify emergencies.
Pause. Verify. Then act. Never let fear force you into sending money.
