When seconds matter, a plan beats panic. Every time.

On average, 7 people die every day from home fires in the U.S., and you may have as little as two minutes to escape.

First responders in our county (Leland Volunteer Fire Department) train for the worst every week. Your family shouldn’t wait for the worst to happen before figuring out what to do.

Make the plan. Practice the plan.
Because the middle of an emergency is a terrible time to figure out what comes next.

For guidance on how to write a plan, see our website www.deltaready.us/planandprepare

Nighttime tornadoes are twice as deadly as daytime ones. In Washington county, our flat land gives severe weather zero natural obstacles to slow down. When storms make it across the river late at night, you have no time for hesitation. If an alert goes off at 3am in Greenville, Leland, Hollandale, wayside, guessing where to go in the dark isn’t a strategy.

This week is fall severe weather preparedness week. Each day, we will post about different fall weather preparedness ideas. Day 1 is MAKE A PLAN.

1. Pick your home’s interior safe spot
2. Make sure your phone’s emergency alerts and NOAA Weather radio are set loud enough to wake you up.
3. Ensure your family can reach shelter in under 10 seconds.
