5,000 interviews. One extraordinary professional. An impact beyond measure. ❤️

Today, we celebrate Christine Carlberg, our incredible forensic interviewer at the Julie Valentine Center, who recently completed her 5,000th forensic interview!

It’s a milestone worth celebrating, but also a heartbreaking reminder of the reality behind the numbers. Each interview represents a child whose voice needed to be heard and a story that deserved to be met with compassion, care, and dignity.

We wish there were no need for forensic interviews. We wish every child grew up safe from abuse. But until that is our reality, we are profoundly grateful for professionals like Christine, who bring exceptional expertise, patience, and compassion to some of the hardest moments in a child’s life.

Christine, thank you for showing up for children and families 5,000 times. Your work matters more than words can express, and our community is better because of you.

We celebrate this milestone, acknowledge the heartbreaking need behind it, and are so grateful that children have someone like you in their corner.

The headlines lately have been hard to read. Stories about sexual violence, accountability and the experiences of survivors are generating anger across the country. And while the headlines may feel national, sexual violence is happening right here in Greenville.

Just a few weeks ago, here in our own community, the Julie Valentine Center responded to 16 sexual assaults in 11 days. Sixteen people. Sixteen lives changed. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a story.

This is why the work we do at JVC matters. We cannot prevent every assault, but we can create a community where survivors are believed, not blamed. We can ensure that survivors have someone to walk beside them through the medical, legal, and emotional aftermath. We can continue to educate our children and work toward a culture that makes sexual violence less possible in the first place.

When Faith Hurts brings faith leaders into relationship with the Julie Valentine Center, community partners, subject-matter experts, people with lived experience, and other faith leaders who are committed to creating safer communities.

These are the connections that can become a network of support when you encounter a situation you have never faced before. People who can help you recognize what is happening, understand your role, connect you with appropriate professional resources, and walk alongside you as you determine the next right step.

Why talk about forgiveness at a conference about abuse? Because for many survivors, forgive has been used not as an invitation to healing, but as a demand for silence, reconciliation, or premature resolution. Forgiveness can be a meaningful and spiritually beneficial practice, but it is not synonymous with forgetting, excusing, minimizing, reconciling, or releasing someone from accountability. Through videos and case studies, this session will explore trauma-informed approaches to teaching, preaching, and offering spiritual care around forgiveness while honoring survivors’ autonomy, safety, boundaries, and right to accountability.
