FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Greenwich Fire Department Awarded Assistance to Firefighter Grant for Fireground Water Supply
The Town of Greenwich has been awarded $81,200 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Fiscal Year 2025 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program to provide advanced pump operator and tanker shuttle training for the Greenwich Fire Department.
The funding will provide Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator and Tanker Shuttle Operator certification training for Greenwich’s career and volunteer firefighters, representing a significant investment in the Department’s ability to establish and maintain reliable fireground water supplies throughout the community.
The training is essential to fire protection in Greenwich’s backcountry. “This is especially important in the backcountry, where the absence of municipal hydrants, combined with large properties, extended setbacks and lengthy driveways, can create additional challenges for fire suppression. Establishing and maintaining a dependable water supply is essential to sustaining an effective fire attack.” Stated Assistant Fire Chief Charles Lubowicki.
The Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator training will strengthen firefighters’ skills in pump operations, and the tanker Shuttle Operator training will focus on establishing static water supply and the coordinated movement of apparatus needed to maintain a sustainable fireground water supply. The training will also strengthen interoperability between Greenwich’s firefighters and mutual aid departments.
“A reliable water supply is one of the most fundamental requirements of an effective fire attack, and that becomes significantly more complex when a fire occurs in an area without fire hydrants,” said Fire Chief Joseph McHugh, “This grant provides an important opportunity to strengthen the skills of our career and volunteer firefighters and ensure our personnel are prepared to establish and maintain the water supplies necessary to protect our community.”
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program supports fire departments and emergency response organizations in improving their ability to protect the public and firefighting personnel from fire and fire-related hazards. FEMA determined that Greenwich’s project was consistent with the purpose of the AFG program and worthy of funding.
The Greenwich Fire Department would like to thank the Town of Greenwich administration and elected officials in supporting the department to continue to strive to provide the best response possible.
