Fall leaves are more than yard waste. They provide essential habitat for salamanders and mammals!

Fallen leaves create a protective layer that helps salamanders retain moisture and shelter from temperature extremes. Small mammals, such as mice and shrews, also rely on leaf litter for cover, nesting material, and places to forage for food.

When we remove every leaf from our yards, we may be removing important habitat for the wildlife that lives in and around our neighborhoods. This fall, leave some leaves where they fall to help protect salamanders, small mammals, and other wildlife throughout the colder months.

Fall leaves are more than yard waste. They’re essential habitat for butterflies and moths!
Many butterflies and moths spend the winter in leaf litter as eggs, caterpillars, or pupae, relying on fallen leaves for shelter from cold temperatures and predators. These hidden stages are essential to their survival and the next generation of these beautiful insects.
When we remove every leaf from our yards, we may be removing the butterflies and moths that will emerge next spring and summer. This fall, leave some leaves where they fall and help protect the next generation of these important pollinators and other beneficial insects.
