In a lot of small Texas towns, the fire department is just your neighbors. đźš’ The same folks who had folding tables set up out front on Saturday selling brisket plates to help pay for new gear.

Then the pager goes off at 2 in the morning and they get out of a warm bed, drive to the station and roll out for somebody they probably know by name. No paycheck, no shift schedule, just a truck and whoever can get there. 🤠

That is the kind of quiet thing that holds a little town together, and most of them would tell you it is nothing. If your town has a volunteer department, who is the one everybody knows is always first to the station?

Today, we’re proud to announce that the Gregory Firefighters Association has officially received recognition as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

This milestone means donations to our association are now tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Funds raised through the nonprofit go directly back to supporting Gregory firefighters by helping purchase essential gear and equipment and providing valuable training opportunities.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this possible. If you would like to support the association, please send us a message for donation or volunteer information.

The fire truck that comes when you call in most of Texas is driven by somebody who was asleep in their own bed four minutes ago. đźš’

The large majority of fire departments in this state are volunteer. Not paid, not on shift, not sitting at the station waiting. They are welders and teachers and nurses and guys who run a feed store, and they carry a pager or a phone that can go off in the middle of a shower, a birthday dinner, or a Tuesday at two in the morning. Then they drive to the station, pull gear that is still damp from the last call, and go.

They pay for a lot of it themselves, or the county pays what it can, or the community does it with a barbecue plate sale and a raffle. The trucks are often older than the people driving them. And the calls are not only fires. They are wrecks out on the highway at night, grass fires running with the wind, water rescues, and cardiac calls where the closest hospital is fifty minutes away and the volunteer EMT kneeling on the floor is the only medicine in the room.

The hard part nobody outside it talks about is that in a small town you know the address before you get there. 🙏 You know whose kitchen it is. You go anyway, and then you go back to work in the morning like it was nothing.

⚡🔥 ELECTRICAL FIRE SAFETY REMINDER 🔥⚡

During last night’s parade and fireworks show, our department responded to a small electrical fire in one of our own Humvees. The fire started behind the dashboard and was quickly contained. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Apparently, the Humvee wanted to add its own special effect to the fireworks.

Electrical fires can happen anywhere.

Vehicle smoke or burning wiring? Pull over, shut it off, get out, and call 911.
Never use water on an energized electrical fire.
When in doubt: GET OUT. STAY OUT. CALL 911.

Small electrical problems can become big fires fast.

Stay safe, Gregory!

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the firefighters, first responders, law enforcement officers, military members, and civilians whose courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We remember those who ran toward danger when others were running away, those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the families whose lives were forever changed.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

On Monday, September 7, Gregory Volunteer Fire Department responded to a large brush fire near FM 136 and County Road 1458. Crews returned to the same location Tuesday for additional fire activity. The fire burned approximately 130 acres and is now 100% contained.

We would like to thank the Portland, Texas Fire Department, Ingleside Fire Dept, Aransas Pass Fire Department, Rockport Volunteer Fire Department, Fulton Fire & Rescue, Bayside Vol Fire Department, and Taft Volunteer Fire Department for providing mutual aid. We also thank the Texas A&M Forest Service for responding with its task force and dozers to assist with containment efforts.

Special thanks goes to Terravex Drone Operations for providing drone support throughout the incident. Live aerial footage was displayed at the command post, giving incident commanders a better view of conditions and operations inside the brush. After dark, the drone’s thermal-imaging camera allowed command staff to continue monitoring fire activity and the locations of brush trucks operating in the area.

Incidents of this size require extensive coordination and teamwork. We sincerely appreciate every agency and individual who helped bring this fire under control safely.

Thank you Anheuser-Busch and National Volunteer Fire Council for the generous donation of emergency drinking water, and to L & F Distributers for delivering it to our fire station! This water will help keep our firefighters hydrated during wildfires and extended responses in extreme heat.

The donation is provided through Anheuser-Busch’s Emergency Drinking Water for Wildland Firefighters program, which supports volunteer departments with critical hydration resources during wildfire season. Learn more at www.nvfc.org/water.

Use caution and avoid the US 181 Causeway Bridge if possible. TxDOT says traffic control is expected to remain in place all morning.

Yesterday afternoon, Gregory Volunteer Fire Department responded on a mutual aid call to the Holden Fire near the 1400 block of State Highway 35 Bypass in Aransas Pass. Working alongside numerous local and state agencies, crews assisted with containing the approximately 36-acre brush fire that threatened nearby homes. The fire is currently reported to be 95% contained.

We would also like to thank GP Transport for their assistance during the incident. A special thank you to Ruben Solis and Fred Pena, who helped our firefighters replace a tire on one of our brush trucks, allowing it to get back into service quickly. Your willingness to stop and help during an active emergency is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners for their teamwork and dedication throughout this incident.

As you celebrate Independence Day, Gregory Volunteer Fire Department reminds everyone that fireworks are prohibited within the Gregory city limits.

Fireworks can quickly start grass and structure fires, especially during hot and dry conditions. Help us keep our community safe by leaving the fireworks to professional displays.

We appreciate your cooperation and wish everyone a safe and Happy Fourth of July!
