1) What impact have you seen United Way make firsthand in your community?

"United Way is strengthening our community by aligning resources with needs across a very wide spectrum. Critical needs from healthcare to literacy to assistance with basic necessities can be fulfilled with United Way funding and supported programs."

2) Why is United Way different from other nonprofits?

"United Way has the ability to address a large range of needs and support multiple other organizations that are already optimized to focus on specific areas of need. Through ongoing partnerships with these local organizations, United Way is able to positively affect the lives of many more people in the communities we serve."

3) How has serving through United Way changed your view of need in the community?

"While relatively new to serving with United Way, I have seen firsthand over the years the impact of funding from United Way on several local organizations that directly serve our area. These organizations can do so much more with United Way funding as a component of their existing fundraising efforts and dedicate more of their resources to delivering much-needed services to the community."

Griffin-Spalding County United Way’s Read United program is looking for volunteers to work one-on-one with local students, helping them strengthen their reading skills, grow their confidence, and build a stronger foundation for success in the classroom.

You don’t need to be a teacher or have any special experience. You just need to be willing to show up, encourage a student, and help make reading something they can feel confident about.

💙💛 The Griffin-Spalding County School System, Griffin GA is kicking off its United Way campaign in a BIG way!

Dr. Warren set the tone for an exciting campaign by reminding us what it means to be UNITED IN COMMUNITY and the difference we can make when we come together for our students, families, and neighbors.

Through our partnership with Griffin-Spalding County Schools, United Way is helping bring programs like Read United into local elementary schools to provide tutoring and literacy support so that every student can thrive.

But our impact reaches far beyond the classroom. Together, we are supporting programs and nonprofit partner agencies that strengthen families, create opportunities, and provide critical help to people throughout Griffin-Spalding County when they need it most.

We are so grateful for the incredible faculty and staff of Griffin-Spalding County Schools who continue to show what it means to LIVE UNITED and GIVE UNITED!

Here’s to an amazing campaign and an even greater impact on our community! 💙 UNITED IS THE WAY!

🎉 UNITED IS THE WAY at Caterpillar! 🎉

What an incredible way to kick off the Caterpillar United Way Campaign! 🖤💛

Caterpillar officially launched this year’s campaign with an exciting Agency Fair, bringing employees together with United Way, participating nonprofit-funded agencies, food trucks, and even a car show! 🚗

Caterpillar is truly showing that UNITED IS THE WAY, uniting employees and community partners around one shared purpose: making a difference and changing lives in the communities they serve.

PROFILE - Melissa Vega is one of our dedicated Read United site coordinators, working closely with schools across Griffin to help students build the reading skills and confidence they need to succeed.

Her passion for making sure every child has the opportunity to thrive, both inside and outside the classroom, is evident in everything she does. We recently asked Melissa to share a little more about her work, what inspires her passion for literacy, and why Read United matters. Here’s what she had to say:

1) What has been the most rewarding moment you’ve experienced while working with Read United students and volunteers?

"I think the most rewarding moment I have experienced while working with Read United students and volunteers has been watching the children smile and get excited because they finally can read a word, a whole sentence, or let alone, read a whole book on their own. It makes me so happy to see their confidence grow. Watching the volunteers become so involved and become just as proud and excited as the children when they reach their reading goals. It’s awesome seeing everyone celebrate those achievements together makes the experience very special."

2) What impact have you seen Read United make on students’ reading skills, confidence, or excitement about learning?

"I have seen students become more confident and willing to try, even when they feel reading is hard. When their reading starts to improve with practice, they begin to look forward to meeting with their volunteer each week. One of the biggest impacts is seeing students become excited and want to read their books back to their volunteer to show how much they have learned."

3) What would you say to someone considering becoming a Read United volunteer this school year?

"I would tell them to do it! You don’t have to be a teacher to make a difference. By spending a little time helping a child read and becoming a positive cheerleader can change a child’s life. It is a fulfilling experience to see them grow."

A record turnout and a room full of volunteers ready to make a difference! 📚

The Read United team at Griffin-Spalding County United Way recently hosted a training seminar to prepare volunteers for the upcoming school year. With record attendance, the team is ready to help even more students strengthen their reading skills, build confidence, and stay on track for success.

A special thank-you to Superintendent Dr. Donald Warren for participating and showing his support for Read United and the students of Griffin-Spalding County.
