THREE DIFFERENT CRIMES. MANY OF THE SAME WARNING SIGNS.
Human trafficking. Domestic violence. Child abuse.
These are three different crimes, but the warning signs can be remarkably similar.
Often, the common thread is fear, control, isolation, and abuse.
Someone experiencing any of these situations may show signs that something is wrong, even when they are unable or afraid to ask for help.
WHAT SHOULD YOU WATCH FOR?
🔹 Unexplained injuries: Bruises, burns, cuts, or injuries in different stages of healing. Frequent explanations that don't match the injuries.
🔹 Fearful behavior: Appearing unusually nervous, anxious, withdrawn, or afraid of upsetting a particular person.
🔹 Controlling behavior: Someone else answers questions for them, makes their decisions, controls their money or phone, or refuses to let them speak privately.
🔹 Isolation: Suddenly losing contact with friends or family, missing school or work, or being discouraged or prevented from participating in normal activities.
🔹 Poor physical condition: Unexplained weight loss, exhaustion, poor hygiene, untreated injuries, or lack of necessary medical care.
🔹 Restricted freedom: Being closely monitored, unable to leave freely, or needing permission for ordinary activities.
🔹 Changes in behavior: Becoming unusually quiet, fearful, secretive, or withdrawn, particularly around a specific individual.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Human trafficking, domestic violence, and child abuse do not always look the way we expect.
Victims may be afraid to speak up. They may have been threatened, manipulated, or made to believe that no one will help them.
And sometimes, the person responsible is someone they know, love, trust, or depend on.
Not every warning sign means a crime is taking place. But when several signs appear together, or someone's behavior changes dramatically, we should pay attention.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
If you suspect someone is being abused, controlled, exploited, or harmed, don't ignore your concerns. Do not confront a suspected abuser or put yourself or the victim in danger.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
