Happy birthday, Mother Bailey! Born in Groton on October 11, 1758, Anna Warner β€œMother” Bailey became a legendary American figure for her actions during the War of 1812. In the summer of 1813, as Groton and New London faced attacks by British naval forces in Long Island Sound, Mother Bailey learned that the Groton soldiers were facing a shortage of wadding for their guns. In response, she removed her flannel petticoat on the spot and donated it to the cause. The story received national attention in the years following the war and numerous admirers, including three U.S. Presidents, came to call on Mother Bailey in her home at 108 Thames St., Groton (pictured here in 1982). What frights await you in our spooky book display? πŸ¦β€β¬›

Pick up a surprise scare from our Hidden Horrors shelf (adults only), featuring a spine-tingling novel and ghoulish goodies. We like to think that the "master of the macabre" would approve of our selection of Gothic horror titles!

On October 6, 1958 the world's second nuclear powered submarine, the USS Seawolf (SSN-575), surfaced in Long Island Sound after remaining submerged for 60 consecutive days. The mission broke the record for continuous underwater operations at that time (nearly doubling previous record of 31 days set up the USS Skate). The Seawolf was built by Electric Boat in Groton and is pictured here on launching day in 1955. Postcard donated by Jim Streeter, from the Local History Collection at the Groton Public Library.
