Navy Medicine's research and development laboratories are engaged in a broad spectrum of activity from basic science in the laboratory to field studies at sites in remote areas of the world to operational environments. The capabilities and the geographical locations of the laboratories reflect the broad mission of Navy Medicine Research and Development. With a cadre of scientific leadership and technical expertise focusing on force health protection and enhancing deployment readiness, the research teams represent years of experience in science, medicine, and the military. NSMRL delivers evidence-based solutions that enhance undersea warfighter health and performance. NSMRL researchers have local access to Submarine Squadrons 4 and 12, the Naval Submarine School, the Naval Submarine Support Center, the Naval Undersea Medical Institute, the Undersea Warfighting Development Center, the Submarine Learning Center, and an important center of submarine design, construction, and lifecycle support: General Dynamics Electric Boat. The laboratory ensures the superiority of submariners and divers by conducting research in nine core research areas: undersea warfighter health and performance, submariner psychological fitness and resiliency, human systems integration, submarine atmospheric monitoring, bioeffects of underwater sound and blast, hearing conservation, diving and hyperbaric research, disabled submarine survival, escape, and rescue, and undersea health epidemiology. NSMRL’s mission is to sustain the readiness and superiority of our undersea warriors through innovative health and performance research. NSMRL’s vision is to lead the world in delivering science solutions to ensure undersea warrior dominance. The goal is to deliver high-value, high-impact research products to support and protect today's deployed warfighters. At the same time researchers look to the readiness and well-being of future forces.

A huge shoutout to our NSMRL team members who participated in the 2026 Career Day at Teachers Memorial Middle School (TMMS) last week! They spoke with students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades about the multitude of different career fields available in the Navy, specifically representing Navy physicians, physiologists, and psychologists. Volunteers answered questions from students about how their positions work to enhance the health and readiness of our service members, making sure we retain a healthy fighting force! Thank you again to TMMS for having us back -- we are already looking forward to the next one!

Thank you to Surgeon Captain Richard Heames of the UK Royal Navy for visiting NSMRL earlier this week! Heames traveled here from the Institute of Naval Medicine in Gosport, UK, to discuss common areas of interest and strengthen collaboration between our two organizations. While here, he presented a Lunch and Learn on the History and Capabilities of the Institute of Naval Medicine. He was also provided with a tour of the facilities and briefings on the significant laboratory and field work that we do across critical areas including the submarine atmosphere, underwater acoustics, decompression stress in divers, submarine escape and rescue, human systems integration, hearing conservation, and epidemiology.
