Whitehill Stone House Located in Ryegate, VT, the Whitehill Stone House is an historic site built in 1808. Members of the Whitehill family meet annually each August.

In the style of a Scottish stone craft (farm house), this house was erected by James Whitehill, a prosperous farmer and one of a large number of immigrants from Inchinnam Pertik, Scotland, who settled in Ryegate under the sponsorship of the Scotch American Company of Farmers. He purchased 600 acres, known as the Witherspoon Tract, from James Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence who owned the entire township. Whitehill was a founder of the Ryegate Reformed Presbyterian Church. This is one of the oldest surviving houses in Ryegate and was the first library in town. The house and surrounding acreage is still owned by the Whitehill Family.

This past Saturday, August 15, we gathered to celebrate the 98th anniversary of the first Whitehill Family Reunion. It was a beautiful day at the Stone House, and we enjoyed making connections with family and community. We shared delicious food, especially desserts, and were treated to wonderful Highland piping, Celtic songs, and storytelling by Iain MacHarg and Ian Gauthier. A huge thank you to everyone who helped plan and support this event, and to those of you who were able to attend this year. Can't wait to see you again next year on Saturday, August 21, 2027!

Open House this Saturday, July 4th! Come take a tour of the Stone House and property from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. WHLA trustees will be on site to answer questions and show you around. This is a great opportunity to view the Whitehill property and take a walk to see the cairn, erected in 1928 at the very first Whitehill Family Reunion. We look forward to seeing you!!

Also - we will have a table at the July 4th Peacham Farmers Market, and our Annual Whitehill Family Reunion is coming up on August 15th! Lots of exciting events this summer!

On Saturday, May 23rd, Ryegate hosted its 250th Celebration and kindly invited us to exhibit in the Town House. It was such a fun day! We had lots of people stop by and ask questions, and we really enjoyed sharing information. We also got a chance to explore the other activities, including people turning wood, churning butter, and dipping candles. The organizing committee did an amazing job, and we thank them for including us!!

Next up for the Whitehill Stone House: An exhibit at the Peacham Farmers Market and an Open House at the Whitehill property on July 4th. The Farmers Market runs from 10-1, and the Stone House will be open from 11-2. Come see us, take a tour of the Stone House, and walk up to the cairn!
